Tarleton State University Athletics has opening for Head Athletic Trainer and welcomes applications, nominations, and referrals. This position provides athletic training services to inter-collegiate athletes to ensure the proper medical care, prevention and treatment of injuries.  Persons must have the ability to make independent decision in the following areas:  injury assessment, injury referrals, injury care management, return to play, emergency care, communication and administration under the supervision of the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.  This position requires the ability to work with the athletic training staff, strength and conditioning staff, sport coaches, athletic administration, team physicians, and various departments across campus. Persons must possess the skills necessary to multi-task, complete tasks on time, and plan effective strategies to manage multiple student-athletes.  A staff athletic trainer is generally assigned to support specific varsity teams with various administrative responsibilities.  This is a twelve-month position with full benefits.  Work hours will vary based upon the time of year but do include evenings, weekend and travel with assigned sport. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Due to the non-traditional work hours of collegiate athletics, work hours can be flexible especially out of season to promote work-life balance.  The work required is in-person and located in Stephenville, TX. 

Responsibilities

75% - Clinical care for assigned student-athletes

  • Coordinates medical care of intercollegiate student-athletes consistent with the Tarleton State Sports Medicine Guidelines. Care includes the prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, return to play decisions and emergency care of injuries and/or illnesses

  • Supports assigned varsity team(s); handle walk-in-care and supports special events as assigned

  • Provides appropriate practice and game day coverage, including team travel as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine

  • Implements measures to prevent injuries and prepare athletes for practice and competition, including taping, bracing, therapeutic exercise, movement screens and wearable technology

  • Refers student-athletes to team physicians as appropriate and implements physicianâ™s instructions regarding management of athletic injuries

  • Makes appropriate decisions regarding the sports medicine emergency action plans and carries out plans for each athletic venue

  • Supports the education of Tarleton Stateâ™s Masters Athletic Training Students through their preceptor role

  • Maintains Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers and/or Texas Athletic Training Licensure; Maintains First-Aid, CPR and AED Certification

  • Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of the Texas A&M System, Tarleton State University and Tarleton State Athletics

  • Employs the standards, practices and procedures of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, National Athletic Trainerâ™s Association, Western Athletic Conference and Texas Department of License and Regulation


25% - Administrative duties

  • Communicates professionally and effectively across multiple stakeholders including but not limited to, student-athletes, athletic training staff, athletic training students, team physicians, coaches, athletic administration, strength and conditioning staff, MSAT and Kinesiology faculty, other sports medicine umbrella practitioners and campus colleagues

  • Prepares and maintains medical records, including but not limited to the documentation of injury reports, medical treatments, rehabilitation programs, medical referrals and other medical records

  • Carries out NCAA and/or Institutional Drug Testing per the respective protocols

  • Carries out various administrative responsibilities needed to maintain operational  procedures of a Division I Athletic Training Facility per Tarleton State Sports Medicine Guidelines

  • Supervises assigned Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer per Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine

  • Supports the education of Tarleton Stateâ™s Masters Athletic Training Students through their preceptor role

  • Completes all Texas A&M System and Tarleton State University training requirements on time

  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority

  • Reports non-compliance incidents to their supervisor, manager and/or compliance officer

  • Maintains thorough knowledge of and adheres to and enforces all Tarleton, Association, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively in a team environment

Minimum Requirements:  Masterâ™s Degree, Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers and/or Texas Licensed Athletic Trainer.  If outside of Texas, candidates must be eligible for Texas State Licensure.  Candidates must maintain First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. 

Other Requirements: Non-traditional work hours including nights, weekend and travel are required.  The ability to maintain a  valid driverâ™s license and to drive personal, institutional and rental vehicles are required.  All candidates should be able to lift and move medical equipment and supplies weighing up to 75-100 pounds. 
 

Preferred Requirements:  2-3 years employed experience as a certified athletic trainer in secondary school, collegiate or professional athletics is preferred.  Candidates with experience in therapeutic exercise, manual therapy or soft tissue certifications are preferred.

Salary

Commensurate with experience

The target base annual salary is commensurate with experience and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
