Job Summary:

Under immediate supervision, and in accordance with schedules or periodic instructions, the Groundworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of campus. Groundworkers typically perform work involving some or all the following duties:

  • Plant, cultivate, fertilize, water and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers; rake leaves; hoe weeds; clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots; prepare and treat soils for planting; maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees.
  • Hedges, and shrubs and erect tree supports; may operate and perform minor maintenance on small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment; may assist in the preparing and lining of athletic fields for events; may occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions; may drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; and may provide lead work direction to students and unskilled assistants.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

Experience: One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor. 

  • Physical Requirements:  Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Abilities: Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Compensation: The salary range for this classification is $ 3,376.00 to $ 5,297.00/month. 

  The hourly range for this classification is $19.48 to $30.56.

Position Information:

Work status: Full-time, Part-time, Temporary, Hourly, On-Call, Intermittent "Non-exempt" positions.

Schedule: To be arranged by hiring department.

* A pool of qualified candidates will be established for current and future vacancies at the San Bernardino or Palm Desert Campus. Qualified applicants will be kept active from January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2023.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Driver’s License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Physical Exam

Employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
