Job Summary 
Performs journeyman level work and participates in the grounds care operation and University buildings, areas, and remote sites.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Coordinates with Gardeners or takes the lead as directed to perform grounds and lawn maintenance which includes: plant trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass; trims and edges around walks, flower beds and walls using clippers and edging tools; prunes shrubs and hedges to shape and improve growth; and rakes and removes leaves.
  • Takes the lead as directed to perform grounds maintenance task as operating tractors, lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, pruners, hand tools, and other related grounds work. Participates in all types of ground maintenance such as fertilizing by spraying apparatus or by hand, trimming, pruning, watering, and other items and accessories associated with the grounds trade. Assist in the service, maintenance and repair of grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Waters lawn and shrubs using hose or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler systems. Assist in the installation, operation and maintenance of sprinkler system
  • Participates, or takes the lead as directed in grounds operations to include the construction of planting areas, grounds improvement, sodding, sprigging, seeding, planting, and other related grounds work in accordance with blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions
  • Sprays lawns, shrubs and trees with fertilizer and insecticide. Picks up trash and debris. Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Serves as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and as directed by the Director of Physical Plant participates in pre-emergency preparations and emergency recovery efforts and performs additional duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications  
    High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). One year’s ground and lawn maintenance experience. Driver’s License required.
     
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
    • Ability to perform grounds maintenance tasks.
    • Skill in interpreting and completing landscape plans.
    • Knowledge of fertilizer and/or pesticide applications.
    • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
    • Ability to operate mowers, tractors, and loaders.
    • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications  
    Three years ground and lawn maintenance experience
