Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 position for the Facilities and Maintenance Team at Oregon State University (OSU) – Cascades.
The Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 is responsible for landscape/maintenance program planning and execution at the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend Oregon. OSU-Cascades operates on a 10-acre main campus at 1500 SW Chandler Ave with one outlying facility, the Graduate and Research Center at 650 SW Columbia Ave. With future expansion already programmed for the main campus, this is an excellent opportunity to join a growing team and shape Oregon’s newest university campus.
The Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 is responsible for landscape/maintenance program planning and performing a variety of tasks to maintain exterior spaces at OSU-Cascades’ facilities. Duties include landscaping, basic horticultural work, snow removal, maintenance of storm water systems and other maintenance tasks. The Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 also serves as a backup to the custodial staff on a limited basis, to cover for vacation and sick leave of the regular custodial crew. During snow removal operations, the Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 is responsible for planning and coordinating the work of classified custodial staff that augment Grounds Maintenance for snow removal.

OSU-Cascades, located in Bend, Ore., is a branch campus of Oregon State University. Key Responsibilities
65% Grounds Maintenance
Performs tasks common to the care of grounds and landscapes by seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and applying chemicals to outside plantings, lawns and turf; inspecting plant materials for insects, disease, physical and mechanical damage and identifying replacements; transplanting, pruning, trimming, and cultivating trees, shrubs, ground cover, and flowers.
Performs regular and directed grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings; weeding, thinning and cleaning planted beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment; and setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems.
Provides a record of the application of chemicals, including areas sprayed, amount and type of chemicals used, substances sprayed and reason, and the wind speed and direction at time of spraying.
Performs campus-wide general maintenance and repairs by installing, removing, repairing and maintaining landscape lighting, signs, cables, chains, barricades, gates, bicycle racks, posts, fences, and rock walls; and repairing streets, parking lots and athletic facilities.
Removes unsightly trash and debris from public areas by regularly inspecting grounds, drains, manhole covers, etc., for debris; raking, sweeping and bagging leaves, debris, dirt and trash from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, tunnels, and transporting the trash to designated central collection points on a daily basis.
Reduces the likelihood for the spread of diseases and unsightly appearance of trash containers in public areas by emptying, cleaning and disinfecting trash and recycling receptacles on a regular basis, and removing, repairing and installing trash and recycling receptacles on University property on an as needed basis.
Assists in preventing accidents resulting from snow or ice covered walkways by removing and installing snow removal equipment on University vehicles and equipment; operating snow blowers, pickups or tractors with blades and using shovels to remove snow and spread gravel and salt on snow- or ice-covered surfaces. Provides training on use of equipment and safe practices for other staff assisting with snow and ice removal.
Prepares outdoor locations for use by visitors, vendors, and the public as needed by campus operations.
Applies chemicals used in grounds keeping properly and safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, masks, and/or rubber gloves and boots, following either written or verbal directions for mixing chemical compounds according to specifications, applying the chemicals properly on grounds and landscapes designated for their use, and disposing of residual chemical products as directed or storing and labeling them for future use.
Safely operates light vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, utility vehicles and portable power tools and equipment such as saws, grass trimmers, snow/leaf blowers, sprayers, paint machines and other grounds keeping equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions, and wearing appropriate safety items such as goggles, gloves, or other appropriate protective clothing.
Ensures that grounds maintenance equipment and building maintenance equipment are operational by performing routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment and machines within reasonable capabilities.
Plans, designs and executes a landscape maintenance program. Maintains and designs modifications to irrigation and sprinkler systems; performs on-site inspections of work areas to determine landscaping needs; takes and tests soil samples to determine the need for chemical additives or natural nutrients; identifies and diagnoses tree, plant and lawn diseases and administers or directs the administration of the remedy; identify specific areas appropriate to specific plant types in coordination with selected OSU-Cascades faculty and recommend planting and landscaping strategy to supervisor; review and interpret site plans and architectural drawings to determine planting or landscaping needs; review work plan with supervisor to set priorities and monitor goals.
Continues to implement OSU’s long-term fire mitigation plan through fuels reduction, brush clearing and tree trimming on the OSU native forested lands. Liaise with Bend Fire Marshall to update city on progress made towards long term fire plan goals. Inspect campus and identify potential hazards and areas of improvement regarding fire mitigation and grounds maintenance.
15% Facilities Maintenance
Perform general maintenance of exterior and interior spaces, including but not limited to: painting, replacement of light bulbs, irrigation system maintenance, furniture repairs, and moving of materials. Facilities Maintenance will be performed under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Coordinator.
15% Custodial
Perform routine custodial tasks including but not limited to: cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, hallways, restrooms, showers, conference rooms, offices, dining areas, and kitchens. Work is performed by hand, using powered equipment and with the use of chemicals.
5% Other Duties as Assigned
What We Require

Pesticide applicator’s license may be required based on position duties; AND Two years experience as a grounds keeper which included plant care; OR An Associate’s degree in Landscape Technology or Horticulture; OR Completion of a Landscape Certification program or license in a horticultural specialty.

  • Ability to sufficiently understand written work orders and instructions as well as directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, fertilizers and similar products used in grounds keeping is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in the proper operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery is required.
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
Oregon Backflow Tester or Specialist certification, CPR/First Aid certification.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry grounds keeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis.
  • Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual, electrically-powered and/or gasoline-powered grounds keeping equipment and machines.
  • Requires the ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 20 feet (e.g., for tree trimming) or higher using powered boom or scissor lifts.
  • Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily out-of-doors, year round.
  • The Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 is expected to be available to respond to emergencies and provide support for special events.
  • Employees in this job classification are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather.
  • The Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 is the primary point of contact and coordinator for snow removal and may require on-call availability during months of higher snowfall potential.
