Job Summary 

Under the supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, serves as a Grounds Lead and will be responsible for supervising the work of landscape personnel. Assists supervisor in administration of daily operations, assigns tasks, schedules project work, and monitors landscape contractors. Must understand and comply with current AQMD, OSHA, and EPA regulations. 

Job Duties 

In coordination and cooperation with other Facilities Management trades and shops, perform various duties, which include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment. 
  • Responsible for supervising and coordinating skills such as: irrigation systems maintenance, tree care management, athletic fields maintenance, integrated pest control management, care and maintenance of walks, streets, service courts, natural ponds, and equipment maintenance. 
  • Promote stewardship initiatives, maintain a healthy campus landscape, address scarce water resources, reduce risks, and implement best practices in grounds management. 
  • Fix minor irrigation problems. 
  • Assist with purchasing, time keeping, and work scheduling. 
  • Collaborate with other Facilities Management staff to ensure productivity, consistency, quality, and efficiency expectations are being met. 
  • Responsible for training and interpretation of regulations, policy, and procedures. 
  • Maintain established standards of performance and perform daily inspections of grounds areas. 
  • Develop training programs and morale incentive programs. 
  • Direct the section’s planned maintenance program and special projects program. 
  • Evaluate and authorize equipment and supplies purchases. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Basic Qualifications 

  • 5 years of landscape experience. 
  • Demonstrate ability to work and communicate with all levels of landscape personnel. 
  • Extensive landscape experience and knowledge of gardening techniques, tree pruning, cultivation, and common plant species. 
  • Thorough knowledge of landscape tools and equipment (including battery tools). 
  • Must have some background in irrigation with the ability to fix minor problems. 
  • Aptitude and proven ability to effectively manage and provide leadership for a large group of employees in a highly diverse environment. 
  • Knowledge of computer programs and of central irrigation control systems. 
  • Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, and Outlook. 
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (both written and verbal). 
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license and maintain it throughout the course of employment. 
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs on a regular basis and be able to work in an outside environment. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 3 years of work experience in a university or facilities setting. 
  • Certification from an accredited trade school. 
  • Proficiency with automated work order system and timekeeping application.
