Graphic Designer - College of Arts and Sciences

Position Summary

The University of Tennessee (UT) College of Arts and Sciences Office of Communications is looking for a graphic designer to join a growing team of professional communicators. The graphic designer is responsible for conceptualizing and creating original designs for all print and digital communications and marketing needs for the college, its 21 departments, 8 interdisciplinary programs, and centers for research and creative activity. This role is responsible for planning, designing, and creating creative pieces including department newsletters, recruiting brochures, event promotion, and the college annual alumni magazine. The graphic designer will uphold all aspects of the university brand.

 



Qualifications

 

Job Responsibilities

          Conceptualize and create original designs for high-impact pieces, including department newsletters, recruiting brochures, and assets for event promotion such as posters, digital signs, and social media graphics

          Work with the communications director to develop the creative brief and lead production of the college alumni magazine, Higher Ground

          Create images, layouts, and illustrations to reinforce and represent the mission of the UT College of Arts and Sciences using products in the Adobe Creative Suite such as InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop

          Works with external vendors to design and order promotional items for all units in the College of Arts and Sciences

          Develops graphics and iconography for print and digital platforms that align with the college brand

          Creates branded research poster and PowerPoint presentation templates for department-specific needs when requested

          Responsible for taking headshots of faculty, staff, and students as needed for college or department publications across all print and digital platforms

          Edits photos for print and digital platforms

          Works with the project manager to develop and manage a college photo asset bank

          Attend UT Design Roundtable as college representative

 

Required Skills

          Ability to create high quality designs for projects with multiple pieces and prioritize, manage, and deliver multiple projects on a rolling delivery schedule

          Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite design tools such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and how to package design files for print production

          Ability to use Canva as a digital design platform

          Skilled in photography and able to edit photos for print and digital platforms

          Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; meets deadlines; exhibits sound judgment

          Ability to present concepts and designs to campus partners or team members clearly and confidently.

          Ability to produce creative work within a system of established templates and content delivery systems.

          Ability to work well independently and as a member of a collaborative team; act professionally; provide and be receptive to feedback and constructive criticism; be a self-motivated learner; teacher , mentor, and share knowledge with others; and build and maintain good customer satisfaction for the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Communications

Preferred Skills

          Skilled in videography and ability to edit videos for use on the college YouTube channel and social media platforms

          Advanced art and illustration skills, specifically the ability to produce scientific illustrations and diagrams for research communications

          Ability to edit copy as needed

          Ability to produce motion or animated graphics using Adobe Creative Suite software

          Knowledge of marketing and communications for higher education

 

Required Education Level

Associate's degree in graphic design, art, communications, or public relations and at least three years of professional experience directly related to duties and responsibilities specified

OR

High school diploma and at least 5 years of professional experience as a graphic designer or in graphic design

Preferred Education Level

Bachelor's degree in graphic design and at least five years of professional experience directly related to graphic design
