Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching. 
We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty. We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employs approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Further, we are supported by an administrative staff of 20, with an additional 20 staff directly supporting research.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Grant and Research Coordinator serves as a key member of the department’s accounting team, comprised of three Coordinators who report to an Accounting Manager. This team facilitates the financial operations of the department, including managing the department’s grant portfolio of approximately $25 million. 
This position has the crucial role of providing direct support to a subset of our faculty. They provide pre-award support, which includes assisting PIs with grant proposals and budget development. They will provide post-award support, which includes developing funding plans for faculty with complex arrangements, ensuring compliance with campus and agency requirements and deadlines, and navigating University policies on procurement and travel. They will provide support with reporting and closeout processes as needed. 
This position will also manage any non-sponsored funds assigned to their particular faculty, such as trust and startup funds.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Must have the ability to interpret and ensure compliance with the standards, rules, and regulations of the University, State, and all Granting Agencies
- Must be able to interpret and analyze financial data
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Prior experience with Contracts and Grants processes, including pre-award submissions, post-award management, Federal funding regulations, and general accounting principles/practices. 
- Prior experience managing a large portfolio of different types of budgets in a University setting is preferred. Thorough knowledge of NIH, NSF, and other grant funding entities
- Experience with ConnectCarolina, RAMSeS, and other relevant UNC systems
