Columbia Basin College ("CBC" or the "College") seeks a Grant Writer to be responsible for developing and submitting public and private grant proposals, and ensuring projects transition smoothly from pre-award to post-award, including: identifying funding opportunities, conducting external research, and working collaboratively with internal and external personnel to develop and support projects and proposals that support the mission and goals of CBC. The position requires expertise in private, state, and federal grant writing, excellent communication skills, and experience in needs assessment and budget development.  

This position reports to the Director for Grants Administration. 

This position closes April 28, 2024 @ 11:59 PM Pacific Time.

Primary Responsibilities

Pre-Award Responsibilities:

  • Research and maintain current knowledge of public and private grant opportunities and make referrals for departmental consideration;
  • Review potential grant opportunities with the appropriate Vice President or Dean to determine if the opportunity fits and supports existing strategic program direction;
  • Network with secondary schools/districts, other institutions of higher education, and business/industry partners to develop new initiatives;
  • Develop and lead teams to produce grant applications;
  • Assist faculty and staff in project development, including preparing documentation for internal Cabinet review and approval processes;
  • Develop relationships with appropriate funding sources and serve as the primary point of contact with funders during the grant development process;
  • Serve as the lead writer on all federal proposals and lead coordinator or writer on all private and state grant proposals;
  • Develop or review all grant budgets, coordinating with Budget Services and Human Resources as needed to ensure appropriate budget structure and employee classification/salary prior to submittal; and
  • Complete and submit public and private grant applications.

Award and Post-Award Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Administrative Services and Human Resources to ensure the timely review and completion of all grant agreements and award documents;
  • Maintain grant submittal and award or rejection documentation in compliance with state and federal records retention policies;
  • Facilitate a smooth transition from pre-award to post-award; including:
  • Leading the initial project kick-off meeting with the grant project team, Administrative Services, and Human Resources; 
  • Providing information and guidance as requested to College personnel involved in grant development and management;
  • Assisting grant administrators with preparing and submitting grant performance reports; and
  • Reviewing all grant performance reports prior to submittal.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Organize and track grant activity, including:
  • Creating and maintaining records of all grants submitted;
  • Preparing and submitting summary reports for grant administrators and College administration; and
  • Maintaining an up-to-date calendar to keep all applicable faculty and staff informed of upcoming grant deadlines.
  • Attend training opportunities to remain proficient in grant development and award processes and stay informed of changing grant standards and proposal guidelines; 
  • Create and provide relevant grant trainings for College faculty and staff;
  • Assist the Director for Grants Administration in preparing and maintaining the College’s Grant Procedures Handbook to ensure up-to-date information is available for College faculty and staff; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an institutionally accredited college or university;
  • Experience in writing successful public or private grant applications; and
  • Experience in project or program development and budgeting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an institutionally accredited college or university;
  • Two (2) years of documented success in writing awarded federal grant proposals; 
  • Experience working in higher education; and
  • Experience in internet-based research skills and ability to synthesize research and data.
