Job Summary

This position seeks an experienced subject-matter expert for academic grant and fellowship writing with a demonstrated record of success obtaining external funding for graduate programming and experience directing a postdoc office to support graduate students and postdoctoral career development.  This position directs the Office of Postdoctoral Studies, fostering a sense of community and providing career development resources.  This position helps to identify and write proposals for external funding for initiatives relevant to Purdue University.  The Grant Writer and Postdoc Office Director also coordinates the activities of the postdoctoral office at Purdue.  These activities include but are not limited to providing grant writing support to both graduate and postdoctoral trainees through delivering workshops, providing guidance, and reviewing drafts, coordinating professional development opportunities, meeting with postdoc representation and developing and leading orientation programs, as well as teaching assigned grant writing courses.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Directs the Office of Postdoctoral Studies.  Assesses graduate school funding needs and leads the effort to identify and write proposals for external funding.  Direct and supervise postdoc activities with limited oversight from manager.  Organize and develop fellowship workshops, writing guides, and writing consultations to teach graduate students writing skills for proposal writing.  Coordinate and organize postdoc seminars and manage postdoc career development resources, including proposal writing materials, job search information, and postdoc-specific meetings, orientation, and opportunities.  May devise programming goals and implement improvements tracking and evaluating participant numbers, engagement, and feedback.
  • Review and provide feedback on graduate student and postdoc career development needs, and collaborations with various Purdue departments and external organizations.  Prepare, revise, and deliver trainee specific funding workshops and courses.  Assist trainees with fellowship submissions.
  • Assist in the review of job applications especially for postdocs applying for tenure track positions.  Prepare, revise, and deliver career development workshops specific to postdocs.  Liaison with the Purdue Postdoctoral Association.
  • Supervise student workers through coaching, delegating and guiding projects and assigning tasks.

What We're Looking For:
  • Ph.D. in relevant field
  • Two or more years of academic grant-writing experience with demonstrated record of success in securing external funding
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of required education and related work experience
  • Experience designing curriculum to prepare students for competitive calls
  • Experience with postdoctoral researchers and experience implementing policy for this population
  • Experience communicating and presenting technical information to a variety of audiences
  • Experience with mentorship of trainees and proposal writing
  • Demonstrated skills in Grant Writing, Program and Workshop Development, Communication and Mentorship of aspiring independent scientists
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of graduate student funding (e.g., fellowships (external & internal) assistantships)
  • Thorough understanding of the issues postdocs encounter and ability to develop appropriate programming
