The Opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Life, the Graduate Student Life Advisor is a critical team member whose primary responsibility is to individually meet with graduate and professional students to advise, support problem-solving, brainstorm options, and encourage self-advocacy. Serving 5,200 graduate students across the institution, graduate students often seek support through the Graduate School during challenging times, making it critical for this position to quickly establish rapport and trust while being savvy to balance the student’s perspective, care and support, along with the institution’s position. The function of this position is to serve as a consultant to address the non-academic and often complex individual life needs of graduate students. Recognizing the intersection between student life and academic progress, the Advisor must be well-versed in academic policies/culture, University policies, and campus resources to become a trusted information resource and apply this appropriately to situations impacting our students. The Advisor will be seen as a trusted problem-solver to provide advice and guidance about challenging graduate student issues with faculty, other staff, and campus partners. In addition, this position requires a systems-thinking approach to both the advising function and using advising technology (i.e., Salesforce). The Graduate Student Life Advisor uses student development theories and best practices to develop effective programming strategies and will successfully to graduate student groups. Notably, the Advisor will partner with others to identify potential synergies and opportunities to increase campus support and impact. The Graduate Student Life Advisor is highly committed to social justice and is driven to learn and stay abreast of graduate student affairs and related higher education trends. Due to the nature of this role, some evenings, weekends, and general flexibility with scheduling will be required (e.g., participation in Graduate School orientation and commencement programs).

This is a full-time position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position is primarily in-person, with some flexibility to work from home.

  • Ability to work independently and autonomously without direct supervision, make sound judgment calls when necessary, and relay information appropriately and consistently. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and at least two years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding of graduate education; at least 3-5 years of experience in graduate education.
  • Experience working with students from diverse and historically underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Strong understanding of the academic community environment and demonstrated experience advising students on confidential matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced environment, work as a team member, and be committed to collaborative work.
  • Experience in and demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree.
  • Experience at Cornell University and knowledge of policies and processes related to Graduate School, Student Life, and infrastructure.
