This position is for a full academic year. Applicants with an anticipated December 2024 graduation date will not be eligible for this position.

If your graduate degree program requires you to complete some type of practicum, internship, or co-op that will not allow you to maintain 15 office hours a week during business hours (Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm), at the time of that practicum, internship, or co-op, you may become ineligible for the GCD position.


Job Summary: The Graduate Community Directors (GCDs) manage the day-to-day operations of a residential community and supervise student staff members in that community.

Job duties include:

  • Directly supervises 5 to 16 student staff members
  • Conducts regular supervisory meetings to provide mentoring, motivation, and feedback to staff
  • Participates in student staff training and selection processes
  • Serves as a student conduct hearing officer for their community and meets with students who have violated the community living standards to provide educational interventions and referrals
  • Participates in an on-call rotation to respond to issues, concerns, or emergencies as they arise during or after business hours
  • Monitors maintenance and facilities issues, completes administrative paperwork, and compiles reports
  • Facilitates health and safety inspections and building occupancy verification processes
  • Responds to room change requests
  • Attends weekly staff meetings as well as monthly departmental and divisional meetings
  • Additional duties as assigned

Additional Department Summary: The GCDs are encouraged to participate in at least one departmental committee but will have the opportunity to participate in other HRC initiatives. This job demands considerable time and energy.

The GCD work schedule varies and includes night, weekend, and holiday hours. Office hours will be negotiated with supervising Area Coordinator. The GCD must be present for at least 15 office hours during business hours (Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm).


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current/incoming UA graduate student. Enrolled in a UA graduate degree program for the Spring 2024 semester, in accordance with the Graduate School’s minimum registration requirements for Graduate Assistants. Good academic standing. Meets eligibility requirements for graduate student employment.

Assistantship eligibility requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in 6 to 12 credit hours depending on classification of assistantship
  • Must have and maintain minimum 3.0 GPA to hold assistantships; select GA positions may have higher GPA requirements
  • Must have Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any field; select GA positions may require specific fields or degree programs
  • Must be making satisfactory progress toward degree as defined by academic departments and the Graduate School
  • Must meet requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program. Ability to live on-campus in assigned space/location. Ability to work flexible schedule to accommodate needs of assigned community. Ability to work at least 15 hours per week during business hours (Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm).

Preferred Qualifications: Studying Higher Education Administration or related program. Ability to interact and communicate with a diverse group of people, work cooperatively on a team, identify and respond to the needs of a student population, maintain confidentiality, supervise student staff, and confront policy violations in an objective and consistent manner.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
