About the Program

Berry College is launching the Berry College Program for Inclusive Learning in Fall 2024. Three young adults with an Intellectual Disability will be attending the program during which time they will take academic classes with a peer mentor, have an internship/job on campus, engage with the Berry Community as they explore social and cultural activities, and work towards skills that build independence related to personal and professional development. Students completing the 2-year program will earn a certificate of Integrity in Personal and Professional Development and Community Engagement. This program will recruit (Fall 2024) and accept (Spring 2025) 2-3 additional students to begin the second cohort in 2025-6. Student mentors play a pivotal role in supporting students in reaching academic, vocational, independence, and interpersonal goals. This program is supported by a grant from the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • The GA will assist with data collection, organization, and analysis of academic, internship, and social student learning outcomes of IPSE students for the IPSE grant and to support student success. The GA will also support the development of the IPSE database tracking student progress based on evaluation measures.
  • The GA will assist the IPSE Coordinator in preparing for IPSE events such as Prospective Student Day, Advocacy Day at the Capitol, and Person-Centered Planning events.
  • The GA will work with the IPSE Director and Coordinator to organize peer mentor and volunteer mentor schedules. • The GA will work with Dr. Ampuero to assist training of peer mentors and data collection related to mentor support and training.
  • The GA will support efforts for external communication and PR for recruiting new students, sharing information about the program with the greater community, and potentially managing our social media platforms (FB, Instagram).
  • The GA will support the director by conducting literature reviews and helping select research instruments for a project on emergent adulthood and intellectual disability.

The GA would gain valuable leadership skills in several areas including:

  • Leadership skills related to training peer mentors.
  • Data collection, analysis, and presentation of data using methodology grounded in principles of Applied Behavior Analysis.
  • Executive functioning skills involving organization and communication are critical in supporting effective groups with a common mission.
  • The GA will further develop skills in reviewing psychological literature related to emergent adulthood and universal design.  These are transferable skills to working with young adults and understanding how to create inclusive opportunities for people from diverse neurodivergent backgrounds.
  • Experience working with a diverse population of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in work settings, critical to supporting inclusive and equitable employment communities.
  • Collaborating with state governmental agencies, such as the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities, and grant development and management.

Requirements:

  • An interest and commitment to supporting and advocating for people with intellectual disabilities in inclusion in educational, social, and employment opportunities.
  • Experience with data management such as Excel.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • A willingness to learn about Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) and be part of a dynamic team promoting equity and justice for a historically marginalized population.
