Position Summary
The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Coordinator of Your First Year, this position supports programming and events for all Your First Year (YFY) initiatives.
Your First Year (YFY):
  • Support the Coordinator with the Your First Year Success Series
  • Assist with planning and implementation of major YFY sponsored events such as the Success Series, First-Year Forum, First Finals Fest, Second Year Launch, and others. Responsibilities for each will include:
    • Managing logistics, coordinating volunteers, ordering supplies, reconciling budget, marketing, and assessment.
  • Coordinate overall YFY Success Series program logistics, marketing, communication with campus partners, etc.
  • Coordinate YFY Success Series certificate program
  • Other YFY duties as assigned:
    • YFY Texting – monitor and answer student questions. May require attention outside of normal working hours.
    • Assist with YFY programs such as Storm the Streets, Spartan SPEARS, and SOAR New Student Orientation
    • Assist with the YFY evening programming at SOAR New Student Orientation (evening hours)
    • Assist with YFY social media

Spartan SPEARS program:
  • Manage volunteer logistics and email communications
  • Conduct a virtual training session for volunteers
  • Reach out to campus partners and student organizations for volunteers
  • Conduct assessment of program each semester
  • Track inventory of SPEARS t shirts, giveaways, and other items

Additional New Student Transitions & First Year Experience (NST & FYE) Initiatives:
  • Serve as a member of the NAV1GATE New Student Convocation campus-wide planning committee
  • NST & FYE staff provide support for all departmental programs and services, regardless of the specific functions of each job:
    • Assist with all NST & FYE major events, such as NAV1GATE, SOAR, Rawkin’ Welcome Weeks; includes day-of assistance
    • Represent the department at a number of Student Success division events, including Showcase, Destination, etc.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Starting in August 2024, 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters for a remuneration of a $15,000 stipend, with the opportunity to continue work over the summer and winter break for additional compensation.
    • Preference given to candidates who are available for summer employment (May-July) as a temp/graduate student assistant supporting student transition programs. More information provided during the interview process.
  • Within NST & FYE, Graduate Assistants work collaboratively to share work spaces and provide daily office coverage from 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. Additionally, the office space is shared by undergraduate First Year Assistants.
  • Most work will occur during normal business hours with occasional evening and weekend expectations for required events. Individual accommodations for alternative schedules, flex time and/or time off will be negotiated with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistants are entitled to student holidays. However, due to the nature of orientation/transition programs often occurring during breaks, Graduate Assistants will be required at times to return early or leave late for such breaks. Individual accommodations may be made for each break with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
  • Quality written and oral communication skills required.
  • Preference is given to the following UNCG programs: Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education (HED) or Student Development in Higher Education (CED).
  • A background in program planning and student leadership development experience is preferred.
