Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Director of First Year Experience, this position works primarily with the FYE 101: Succeed at the G (new student transition seminar) program. FYE 101 is a 3-credit, Minerva’s Academic Curriculum (MAC) Foundations course designed to help new students connect to the UNCG community, foster academic success, and engage in personal development. In support of the FYE 101 program, this position will engage in program and curriculum development, teaching, professional development, marketing, and assessment. Additionally, this position supports the First Year Experience team through other initiatives related to orientation, transition, and retention.
RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):
FYE 101: Succeed at the G Program Development:
  • Assist with the ongoing development and administration of the FYE 101 program
  • Provide support for the campus partner workshop program for FYE 101, which includes campus partner recruitment, workshop submission and review, campus partner ongoing support, scheduling, coordination, assessment, and communication
  • Help with the planning and coordination of various FYE 101 events, programs, and trainings such as the FYE 101 Meet & Greet, FYE Instructor Institute, FYE 101 Kick-Off, NST & FYE Reunion, FYE 101 Celebration, etc.
  • Develop and execute an ongoing and comprehensive marketing plan to amplify all aspects of the FYE 101 program, and assist with all communication efforts, including the website
  • Assist with the FYE 101 curriculum development, including but not limited to lesson planning, slide shows, assignment and material creation, engaging activities, etc.
  • Conduct and analyze comprehensive assessments for all aspects of FYE 101, and create final reports

FYE 101: Succeed at the G Support:
  • Co-teach FYE 101 during the fall and spring semester of their first year
  • Provide ongoing support of FYE Instructors, including but not limited to the Canvas resource page, design of teaching resources, creation of the FYE Instructor Newsletters, etc.
  • Lead special research projects pertaining to the programs and services offered by the FYE team

Additional New Student Transitions & First Year Experience Initiatives:
  • NST & FYE staff provide support for departmental programs and services, regardless of the specific functions of each job
  • Assist with all NST & FYE major events, such as 1GNITE, NAV1GATE, SOAR, Storm the Streets, and First Finals Fest; includes day-of assistance
  • Represent the department at a number of University events, including Showcase, Destination, etc.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Starting in August 2024, 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters for a remuneration of a $15,000 stipend, with the opportunity to continue work over the summer and winter break for additional compensation.
  • During their second year, Graduate Assistants have the opportunity, and are strongly encouraged, to apply and become an FYE instructor for the fall and spring semesters. This potential role requires a separate contract due to additional responsibilities, and includes remuneration of a $2,400 stipend per semester of teaching.
  • Professional development funds may be available in support of departmental needs.
  • Within NST & FYE, Graduate Assistants work collaboratively to share work spaces and provide daily office coverage from 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. Additionally, the office space is shared by undergraduate First Year Assistants.
  • Graduate assistants are entitled to student holidays. However, due to the nature of orientation/transition programs, often occurring during breaks, Graduate Assistants will be required at times to return early or leave late for such breaks. Individual accommodations may be made for each break with the direct supervisor. Graduate Assistants do not accrue vacation time. Extensive evening and weekend hours are to be expected. Individual accommodations for alternative schedules, flex time and/or time off will be negotiated with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
  • Quality written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Preference is given to the SAAHE program.
  • A background in education, program planning, communications, and assessment is preferred.
