Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Fitness and Recreation, this position will focus on all aspects of fitness programming and promotion in the Saint Leo University Wellness Center.


Job Description

Duties and Tasks:

  • Assist the Director of Fitness and Recreation with the development and management of a comprehensive fitness program that includes group fitness classes, personal training, wellness programming, and special events.

  • Contribute to the development and revision of administrative policies and procedures within the Wellness Center.

  • Research fitness programming needs of students, faculty, staff, and community members; including long-range strategic planning and providing recommendations.

  • Coordinate the recruitment, selection, training, scheduling, supervision and evaluation of group exercise instructors and personal trainers.

  • Supervise two to five student group exercise teachers and personal trainers.

  • Coordinate the inventory and maintenance of fitness center equipment.

  • Inspect, maintain, and ensure cleanliness of equipment in all areas.

  • Instruct gym introduction class once a week and substitute for group exercise instructors as needed.

  • Supervise the daily operation of the Wellness Center as the Manager on Duty, as scheduled.

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, exercise science, recreation, sports management, physical education, or related field. 

  • Experience in one of the following programming, facility management, teaching group fitness classes or personal training.

  • Knowledge of industry safety standards.

  • At least one current certification or willingness to obtain from a nationally accredited certification organization in group fitness or personal training (i.e. ACE, AFAA, ACSM, AEA, or IAR).

  • CPR/AED & First Aid Certification required or must obtain within one month of hire date.

  • Certification in Personal Training preferred.

  • Principles of supervision, employee development, and performance evaluation.

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing policies and procedures. 

Skills:

  • Strong leadership, organization, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate student workers and/or group exercise instructors.

Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and practice specific safety guidelines for all program areas.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.

  • Ability to train, develop, and supervise group fitness, personal training, and Wellness Center staff.

  • Desire to work with and assist a diverse group of people.

  • Ability to work as part of a professional team that collaborates effectively with colleagues. 

  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 lbs., as well as bending and reaching may be required in some instances.
