ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Global and National Security Institute (GNSI) provides actionable solutions to 21st-century challenges for decision makers at the local, state, national and global level, focused on the boundary of security policy and technology. This initiative is designed to further place the state of Florida at the forefront of addressing critical issues facing the nation in sectors such as defense, economic and political security, health and human security, infrastructure, and environmental security.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Senior Research Fellows form the core of GNSI's research activities and are an indispensable asset, possessing a combination of academic excellence and policy influence. Senior Fellows are responsible to the GNSI Academic Director. Senior fellows are responsible for administering research projects (to include potentially serving as lead for a group research project), conducting research for a specific program or project, and writing research papers for publication. May be involved in teaching, service/outreach, and related activities. May represent the university, college/school, or department/unit on university and/or Statewide committees.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research: The Senior Research Fellow will administer research projects, conduct research for a specific program or project and write research papers for publication. Depending on project, the Senior Fellow might lead a research team composed of individuals within and outside GNSI.
Grants: The Senior Research Fellow will identify grant opportunities and develop grant proposals to acquire resources necessary to further GNSI research efforts. This will involve coordination across the USF system to build interdisciplinary collaborations which satisfy the grant requirements and create competitive proposals to obtain them.
Outreach: The Senior Research Fellow will be expected to build and nurture partnerships across USF, the broader academic community, and the policy community to enable their research and to further GNSI's research efforts.
Teaching: Time permitting, the Senior Research Fellow may have the opportunity to perform teaching duties in support of GNSI's 1-year master's program, or as an adjunct in other areas of the university.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:

  • A PhD in a security related field
  • A record of producing creative work, professional writing, or research in referred and other professional journals.
  • A promising research agenda in global/national security

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Exceptional critical thinking and analysis skills
  • Ability to manage research projects and research teams
  • Knowledge of research methods
  • Familiarity with grant applications

Working Conditions:

  •  Environment/Physical Requirements – Typical indoor environment/office setting
  • Travel – Ability to travel for research and outreach purposes
