Are you a GIS web developer who wants an engaging career in the exciting and dynamic field of data visualization where you can make a difference? At USC’s Institute for Families in Society (IFS), we are committed to using innovative and modern technologies and development tools to share our research with partners and the wider community.
We need your front-end web development skills using HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and design to create innovative dashboards, websites, and modern visualizations. Your web skills can help to improve decision-making and policy implementation, advance good practice and delivery of care, and strengthen communities. Our advanced research institute excels in data science and statistical analysis, with an interdisciplinary team and opportunities to create a variety of visualization tools.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), health information systems, computer science, environmental science or relevant area, and 4 or more years related Web development experience which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience;
Knowledge of Web technologies, and experience with modern HTML/CSS and JavaScript;
Demonstrated front-end web development skills;
Thorough understanding of content management systems;
Demonstrated mapping and cartography skills;
Demonstrated knowledge and skills with GIS, data analytics tools, and data visualization applications such as Tableau, Alteryx, ArcGIS, or ArcPro;
Ability to write and edit technical documentation;
Demonstrated ability to work in a team and independently with good interpersonal skills;
Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Web development, Data Visualization, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Public Health, Environmental Science, or relevant area.
Experience working with health-related datasets such as Medicaid/Medicare, hospitalizations, births, cancer, etc.
Background in GIS and geospatial techniques used in mapping health events.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Experience with GIS software and WebGIS.
A solid understanding of how web applications work including accessibility, security, session management, and best development practices.
Experience developing modern web applications using frameworks, web APIs, and design systems.
Ability to manipulate code efficiently using an IDE or advanced text editor.
Ability to work within version control systems.
Ability to quickly learn new applications and concepts.
Proficiency developing and updating technical documentation and training materials for client business stakeholders to serve as reference.
Ability to successfully manage competing priorities & deliverables in a dead-line oriented environment.
Ability to perform data investigation (e.g., data source identification, feasibility of joins, determine data reasonableness based on business insights).
Ability to confer with teams to resolve conflicts, prioritize needs, develop content criteria, and choose solutions.
Excellent organizational, problem solving, and analysis skills, with the proven ability to multi-task, trouble shoot and prioritize work.
Strong oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, customer service orientation, and proven ability to perform work accurately and efficiently.
