The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist works with the Geospatial Information Librarian to enhance and expand the University Libraries’ geospatial information services program in support of faculty, students, and researchers using geospatial data, methods, and tools. The specialist helps researchers and project teams understand and apply GIS in their research and instruction through consultations and a variety of educational programming. The specialist is responsible for leveraging GIS and geospatial technology resources to enhance curriculum development and research innovation across a wide range of academic disciplines. In collaboration with library colleagues and university partners, the specialist plays an important role in supporting all facets of geospatial information services offered through the University Libraries, including hardware, software, data access, and user services.

This position reports to the Geospatial Information Librarian and is a member of the Research Services Department. Responsibilities:

Research, Education, and Outreach

  • Provide GIS and geospatial data support for research, teaching, and learning needs of faculty and students at all levels and across all disciplines. Engage with users to discuss project requirements, locate and incorporate data and resources into projects, and identify and use geospatial hardware, software, and web-based tools.

  • Collaborate on the development and implementation of library and university digital scholarship projects that involve the use of geospatial data, methods, and tools.

  • Develop and deliver educational content, including workshops and online resources, to promote spatial literacy and increase knowledge of research and teaching applications for geospatial data, methods, and tools.

  • Advance student learning by engaging with course instructors to develop educational resources and teach instructional sessions on geospatial topics relevant to particular disciplines.

  • Refresh and develop new educational content based on emerging trends in GIS and demonstrated user needs.

  • Coordinate and promote outreach activities on geospatial topics, such as GIS Day, by collaborating with library and university partners and engaging with relevant academic departments and student organizations.

Esri Support

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for products available through Ohio State’s Esri education institutional agreement, including license provisioning, organization management, documentation, and technical support for ArcGIS Pro, Online, and Enterprise applications.

  • Research best practices, develop policies, and implement scalable and sustainable solutions to advance the use of Ohio State’s ArcGIS Online organization and other Esri licensed resources for research and education.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or other relevant fields, or a GIS certificate/associate’s degree combined with at least 2-years of relevant work experience.

  • Proficiency in the use of Esri products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise.

  • Experience with Python scripting within the ArcGIS ecosystem.

  • Experience in GIS project management and/or evidence of increasing responsibilities in a GIS-related role.

  • Ability to work with and provide exceptional service to a diverse clientele.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics to a non-technical audience.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with the broader suite of ArcGIS applications, such as Survey123, Experience Builder, Dashboards, and StoryMaps.

  • Experience with open source GIS technologies and programmatic approaches to mapping and spatial analysis.

  • Experience acquiring and using geospatial data from a variety of public and/or proprietary data sources.

  • Experience designing, developing, and/or delivering educational resources.

The posting range for this position is $58,100 to $70,000 annually. University Libraries values work/life balance. While not a fully remote position, the GIS Specialist position is eligible for a flexible work agreement that may include a hybrid of remote and on-site work.
