Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to provide specialized GIS analysis and development support to high priority Facilities Management (FM) and University GIS projects. The position will be responsible for developing and maintaining Campus GIS datasets and related map services, data management scripting and workflow automation tools, and for providing web application development support. The position works under the supervision of the Campus Enterprise GIS development team in Facilities Management and closely with FM IT (ITS) and Division of Information Technology (DIT) technical staff. This position is also responsible for providing limited project coordination support and direction to undergraduate interns, as needed.
Duties include:
  • Design, implement, and maintain Campus GIS datasets and related map services to support FM and University projects
  • Assist in the development of Python/Jupyter Notebook scripting and workflow automation tools to improve efficiency and accuracy of GIS processes and publication tasks
  • Assist with the development and testing of web map applications and application functions using Esri application/dashboard/survey templates, ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, and other web programing APIs/SDKs for high-priority campus and FM GIS projects
  • Assist in the development and testing of mobile and field GIS applications (asset inventories, GPS, etc.)
  • Assist in developing and maintaining data management and project workflow and schedule tracking documentation
  • Participate in FM GIS and Campus Mapping Coordination Meetings and various project meetings (as needed)
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate  program with the University of Maryland, College Park.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

 Experience:
  • Experience using ArcGIS Desktop suite and Python for GIS programming (ArcPy) for data management/workflow scripting is required.

This position requires the ability to work 20 hours per week.

Preferences:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following programs or similar programs (e.g., Geography/GIS, Computer Sciences, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture). GIS/Geography or Computer Science/Information Studies graduate students who have taken the following (or equivalent) courses will be given primary consideration: GEOG473: Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis, GEOG376: Programming for Geospatial Analysis or equivalent. Current or planned enrollment in Internet and Mobile GIS and Programming and Scripting for GIS coursework at the graduate level is also highly desired.
  •  Experience with web programming APIs and ArcGIS Online/Enterprise and ArcGIS Server REST services is strongly desired. 
  • AutoCAD and FME ETL conversion tool experience is also desired.
  • Practical experience with Campus and Facilities and/or AEC GIS is highly desired. 
  •  Relevant internship and/or related work experience in the GIS/programming field preferred. Additional technical coursework may be substituted for internship or work experience.
  • Proficiency with the Esri ArcGIS program suite; GIS programming and scripting methods. 
  • Other web development, programming, and graphic design experience is desired. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
  • Good documentation and communication skills.
