Department Description

The GIS Specialist works under the direction of the office of Campus Planning which is responsible for the development and management of the long range development plan, the physical design framework and the general placeful qualities of campus. In general, the office of Campus Planning ensures that all campus projects comply with these plans and contribute towards the sense of place. The GIS Specialist assist with these functions. The GIS Specialist is also responsible for all aspects of developing and maintaining a geographic information system (GIS) to aid the planning functions with the office of Campus Planning and other offices within CPES, as well as other departments across campus.



Job Summary

The GIS Specialist works in Campus Planning & Environmental Stewardship (CPES) and is responsible for developing and maintaining multiple geospatial databases, as well as mobile and web based GIS applications. The GIS Specialist creates datasets and performs complex multi-variate analyses to help Campus Planning make informed decisions with regards to the physical and spatial aspects of campus, as well as stewardship of resources and the management of infrastructure. The GIS Specialist position while located within the office of Campus Planning serves much of the CPES team and campus in general. The key planning entities within CPES include Campus Planning, Transportation Services, Environmental Stewardship, the office of Sustainability, the Arboretum and Public Garden, and Landscape Architecture, as well as Conference and Events Services and Reprographics.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  •           Access outdoor areas where weather may be present and uneven surfaces exist.
  •           Perform visual and physical assessments of campus environment.
  •           Lift up to 30 pounds.
  •           Sit and work in front of a personal computer for extended periods of time.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT      

  • Vacation usage by employee may be restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus. UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  •           Bachelor’s degree in a related field, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  •           Experience performing multi-variate geospatial analysis.
  •           Experience using ESRI GIS software suite and AutoCad Skill in database design, structure and relevant software.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  •           Project management skills.
  •           Customer service and communication skills to provide courteous service in person, on the telephone, and in writing; to convey a professional and business-like image.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:  

  •           Five years of related experience

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  •           Proficiency in SketchUp and Adobe Creative Suite
  •           Proficient project management skills.
