This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time General Maintenance Mechanic position for the Facilities Operations & Maintenance department at Oregon State University (OSU).

The focus of the Facilities Maintenance unit is quality, efficiency, and customer service oriented Operational Maintenance, Repair, and Construction.
The purpose of this position is to provide quality, courteous, and timely facilities maintenance services to all internal and external customers; to directly support operations and maintenance; to operate, maintain, repair, and modernize equipment and systems in all facilities to provide continuous, reliable and efficient service; to answer after hours calls; provide quality work; to perform equipment preventive maintenance; to estimate time, material, and resource needs; to coordinate work with supported units; and to provide professional quality services to all campus customers.

Key Responsibilities
30% Preventative Maintenance (PM)
  • Assist in the setup, scheduling and performing preventative maintenance on air handlers, chiller cooling towers, and circulation pumps.
  • Replaces fan motors, belts, bearings, and sheaves as needed. Replace/ repairs and adjusts air vent actuators on all air handling systems.
  • Other PM task, as identified.

20% Maintenance & Repair
  • Mechanical repair & maintenance of plant operating systems; heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, refrigeration units, pneumatic and Direct Digital Controls (DDC) controls, tube and shell heat exchangers, and building plumbing systems.
  • Responds to emergency breakdowns and repairs or replaces parts as needed.
  • Assist in daily reactive maintenance tasks.

20% Plumbing
  • Repair and replacement: Pipes, drains and various fixtures and equipment including toilets, urinals, (bathroom, utility, lab and kitchen) sinks, drinking fountains, water heaters, valves, faucets, & related parts.
  • Removal of waste and sewer line stoppages.
  • Installation, repair and Maintenance on water pumps.

10% Participates in the following programs.
  • Customer Service, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMM), Maintenance Operations, Preventive Maintenance, Energy Management, Fire Prevention & Protection, Physical Security, HAZMAT control/Environmental compliance, Emergency Response.
  • Responsible for individual supplies & equipment inventory control and accountability.
  • Prepares requisition forms for supply purchases.
  • Participates in team training and cross training.

10% Equipment maintenance and service
  • Mechanical repairs.
  • Services equipment: check fluid levels, grease and coolants; replaces minor components; changes and/or repairs parts, pumps, fans, and motors.
  • Assists with maintenance and repairs of larger equipment (e.g., refrigeration systems).
  • Metal fabrication to include light welding of steel.

5% Commercial and institutional equipment
  • Troubleshoots, services, and repairs various equipment. Incumbent will operate a university owned vehicle in the execution of daily duties.

5% Other duties as assigned.
  • Any administrative responsibilities include but are not limited to becoming familiar with all construction standards, standard operating procedures, policies and practices set forth for department, follow all business rules, standard operating procedures, and administrative practices for work management duties using the current CMMS system.
What We Require

Four years of experience maintaining, repairing, and fabricating parts for machinery, tools, and equipment such as automobiles, trucks, hydraulic systems, lift trucks, etc.; OR completion of an approved Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship Program.

What You Will Need
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • This position generally works a 4 day 10 hour schedule per week. May be required to report to duty on weekends or be on call.
  • The employee in this position will often be required to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to inclement weather, mechanical equipment and noise, and working at heights or in confined spaces may be necessary.
  • This position uses a university vehicle in the performance of duties.
  • This position is deemed essential, and the incumbent is expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
