Job Summary

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seeks a highly motivated horticulture and arboriculture professional for a  Gardener II role. The successful candidate will join the Arboretum's Horticulture Department in the stewardship of North America's oldest public arboretum and one of the most comprehensive and well-documented plant collections of its kind.

The Arnold Arboretum is a 281-acre museum of trees teaching the world about plants. With one of the world's most biodiverse collections of temperate woody plants, combined with world-class scientific resources, and a commitment to diverse programming, the Arnold Arboretum has been a leader in horticulture since its founding in 1872. This position may be responsible for overseeing the work of seasonal employees and Gardener I employees as needed. In addition, they may support the Arboretum’s internship training programs through development and instruction of hands-on training and mentorship. The successful candidate is expected to engage fully in the professional activities of the Arboretum and work collaboratively with colleagues on interdepartmental efforts. The Arboretum seeks to build a dynamic and diverse horticulture team and encourages all interested candidates meeting the basic qualifications to apply.

Hourly Wage: $33.97. Full-time, Permanent, Benefits Eligible Position.  


Position Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

Depending on the area assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Mowing, string trimming, and leaf clean-up
  • Weeding, mulching, and brush chipping
  • Maintain, repair and operation of various equipment and hand-tools
  • Snow operations
  • Litter management
  • Maintaining and making repairs to grounds structures (e.g., benches, trash cans and signage)
  • Pruning and transplanting as needed under the direction of a Horticulturist I or higher classification
  • Graffiti removal
  • Soil management
  • Irrigation and drainage systems
  • Overseeing the work of interns, apprentices and term appointments
  • May oversee the work of Gardener I workers as assigned.
  • Related job duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

A minimum of three (3) years experience in the field of horticulture or a related field. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Maintain appropriate computerized records for equipment and grounds maintenance; order parts and supplies for grounds and equipment that have been approved by the Manager or Assistant Manager. Possess and maintain (within six months of employment) a hoisting license of the proper classification as required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator’s License. Must be able to perform manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs. Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and essential staff for weather-related emergencies impacting the grounds.

PLEASE NOTE: This position is performed on-site in Jamaica Plain, MA, not in a remote environment.

Work Format Details

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
