The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a FUSE Student Researcher in Chemistry/Biochemistry on the Dahlonega campus. We are seeking two participants for a UNG Faculty - Undergraduate Summer Engagement (FUSE) program opportunity involving materials chemistry research. The project aims to design, synthesize, characterize, and apply porous hybrid materials towards the removal common pollutants found in water systems. The student participants will work directly with the guidance of a faculty mentor gaining significant experience in the areas of synthetic chemistry, analytical techniques/ instrumentation, and scientific presentations/writing. The research assistants will join the FUSE program to conduct focused and meaningful research, scholarly and creative activities alongside a faculty researcher from June 3 - July 26, 2024.

  • Searching and reading chemistry literature (SciFinder and ACS databases, etc.).
  • Attending group meetings/Preparing presentations on research findings.
  • Setting up or preparing chemical reactions and experiments (with the supervision and guidance of a faculty mentor).
  • Using analytical instrumentation to characterize products (with the supervision and guidance of a faculty mentor).
  • Cleaning glassware and lab areas/Restocking supplies.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of general and organic chemistry concepts, tools, and techniques including but not limited to: Stoichiometry, measurements, significant figures, unit conversions, filtrations, titrations, making solutions, setting up reactions using various glassware components, and Schlenk/air-free techniques.  
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Current UNG student not graduating before December 2024.
  • Successful completion of CHEM 3441 and 3441L (Organic Chemistry I and lab). 
  • Previous undergraduate research experience is a plus.
