Location: Burlington, VERMONT
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description:

The Division of Communication and Creative Media at Champlain College seeks a Full/Associate/Assistant Professor of Game Design. The Game Design major is a design program focused on the concepting, prototyping, documenting, and creation of 2D and 3D games. It is part of a robust collection of programs that make up the Game Studio at Champlain College where students work collaboratively while creating innovative projects. Other majors in the studio include Game Art, Game Programming, Game Sound Design, Game Production Management and Game Business and Publishing.

The Game Design major at Champlain College is one of the oldest and most successful Game Design programs in the country, graduating its first class in 2008. Graduates of the program are represented at most major AAA studios as well as founders of numerous indie studios.

The successful candidate will teach a wide range of courses related to game design and will be fluent in the game development process and the various roles within the process-particularly that of the designer. They will need in-engine experience with Unreal, Unity, or an equivalent. The typical teaching load is four courses per semester and will work closely with the Program Director.

Champlain College has small class sizes that optimize instructor-student interaction with hands-on projects that translate theory into practice. Because the College is entrepreneurial and market-driven, its academic programs respond to industry dynamics. Consequently, the College particularly values industry and other practical experience for its faculty.

As part of The Game Studio at Champlain College, the successful candidate will need to be highly collegial and collaborative with faculty from other programs.

Desired skills include professional level expertise in one or more of the following areas related to  game design (we know one person won't be an expert in all of these):

  • Have gone through the development process more than once. Concept through shipping a title.
  • Experience in C#, Blueprints or other scripting languages.
  • Knows how to effectively collaborate with other designers to create a game.
  • Competent in design documentation practices, including visual design and modern communication tools.
  • Familiar with level design, system design and gameplay design.
  • Knowledge of version control tools: git, subversion, perforce, etc.
  • Previous teaching experience is a plus.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have an MFA in a related field. However, consideration will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree plus gaming industry experience.

Additional Information:

The successful completion of a criminal background check is required as a condition of employment.
