The Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University announces a position for a full-time faculty in the field of linguistics, encouraging those at any career stage to apply.  This Continuing Faculty Status-track (similar to tenure-track) position entails teaching courses, conducting research and mentoring students at the BA and MA levels.  We seek candidates who are capable of teaching courses in computational linguistics and natural language processing, as well as some core areas of linguistics.  Courses will be aimed at linguistics major, minors, and MA students, as well as students in other related fields/majors (e.g., computer science, digital humanities).  

We seek candidates who can actively contribute to teaching and mentoring students in our department's minor in Linguistic Computing, BA and MA in Linguistics, and BA in Applied English Linguistics, and possibly our other programs including an MA in TESOL and BA in Editing and Publishing.  Our Linguistic Computing minor offers students foundational knowledge and tools to apply computational methods to natural languages.  Additionally, our Linguistics MA has four emphases, one of which is computational linguistics.  The Department of Linguistics provides a supportive, collaborative atmosphere that contributes to the development of faculty research agendas in a range of areas. 

Required Degree: Ph.D. in Linguistics or a field related to computational linguistics or natural language processing

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:   

All candidates must have:

--Proficiency to teach courses in computational linguistics, natural language processing (e.g., LING 360, 361 440, 581) as well as courses in some core area(s) of linguistics.  See course listings in associated programs:  https://catalog.byu.edu/programs/34635, https://catalog.byu.edu/programs/34637, https://catalog.byu.edu/programs/34636.  

--Evident potential for or substantiated record of scholarly research and/or a well-defined research agenda.

--Commitment to mentoring students effectively in and out of class.  Ability to contribute to linguistics thesis committees as a reader and/or as a chair.  

--Willingness to support student faith through obvious commitment to the religious expectations of the sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  

Ideal candidates would have some of the following:

--Professional experience in computational linguistics.

--Ability to bridge personal scholarship with linguistics

--Keenness to collaborate with students on diverse research projects, both faculty-led and student-driven.

 

Duties/Expectations:  Under a 10-month contract, primary responsibilities will encompass:

--Teaching six courses annually, predominantly within the Linguistics major and Linguistic Computing minor, but also possibly in other department programs (https://ling.byu.edu/all-programs).

--Conducting original research and disseminating that research in reputable journals, books, or other scholarly outlets.

--Mentoring students in linguistic research, research presentations, peer-reviewed article publication, and applying for funding. 

--Contributing to other departmental or college duties, including student advising, thesis chairing, program coordination, committee service, and shared governance.
