Job Description:

The Office of Academic Coaching and Tutoring is seeking a student for employment. This position is funded by the university. All undergraduate students looking for employment are welcome to make application for this position. Please see below the specific duties and responsibilities for this role.

Peer Mentors are responsible for providing both academic and social support to new students in the First Year Experience (FYE) program. Peer Mentors will be chosen based on their ability to be good academic role models, highly communicative and social, high energy, sensitive, compassionate, trustworthy, mature, and reliable.  

The Peer Mentor's mandatory duties for the fall semester include:

  • Attend up to 16 hours of mentor training and meetings.
  • Attend FYE class each week (as an employee, not as a student). Participate actively in all in-class activities. Present in class 5 times per semester for 10 - 15 minutes on topics provided by the ACT Center and FYE.
  • Attend bi-weekly Mentor Meetings with ACT Center Staff throughout the fall semester.
  • Attend an individual mid-term meeting with ACT Center Staff. 
  • Reach out (via email, text, in-person) to each student in the FYE class (about 20 total students) on a weekly basis.
  • Participate in at least two discussion panels or workshop events during the semester.
  • Be up to date with campus deadlines (course registration, add/drop, withdraw, etc.) and remind students of these dates as needed.  Be knowledgeable of other offices/services on campus to share information or refer freshmen to these services as needed throughout the semester. 
  • Stay up to date with all required documentation/paperwork as required by ACT Center staff.
  • Be communicative with ACT Center staff and respond to emails and phone calls with ACT Center staff and faculty within 24 hours.
  • Additional duties may vary, including:

  • Attend meetings with assigned FYE faculty as requested throughout the semester.
  • Escort FYE students to social and academic events on campus in the fall semester, which may include some of the following:
    • Rock the Block
    • Athletic event
    • Musical performance
    • Academic success workshop
    • Film screenings


    Requirements:

    Minimum qualifications include:

  • They must have a GPA of 2.75 or greater and be full-time undergraduate students 
  • They must be endorsed by 2 faculty or staff members
  • They must be free of disciplinary issues
  • They must commit to 4 hours of work per week and be able to attend bi-weekly meetings

    Shift Information:  This is a student only posting. Shift will vary based on student schedules up to 20 hours per week at $15 per hour.
