Job Description:

UPWARD BOUND and UPWARD BOUND MATH AND SCIENCE PROGRAMS

Fitchburg State University Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science are federally funded college access programs for income-eligible/ potentially first-generation high school students. We are seeking multiple individuals to serve as dynamic and committed Residential Counselor/ Mentor during a Summer Academy Residential program at Fitchburg State University.  This six-week position includes 1 training week, 5 weeks of 24 hr. supervision (Mon - Fri) of 80 high school youth in a residential setting. 

Excellent resume building experience.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Actively work with staff in implementation, supervision, and support of youth in all phases of programming activities
  • Supervise and support small groups of students during class/tutoring sessions
  • Supervise and assist small groups of students during afternoon work study/ project based learning/ career exploration
  • Mentor and advise student participants in their pursuit of post-secondary education
  • Plan and supervise evening recreational activities
  • Supervise and maintain order among youth at all time
  • Attend all staff meetings and maintain required records
  • Preference for licensed drivers willing/able to drive youth in a 15-passenger van

  • Requirements:

  • Successful completion of 1 year/ 30 college credit hours
  • Recommended GPA 2.8+ (transcript required)
  • Strong leadership abilities and interpersonal communication skills required
  • Tutoring experience is strongly considered
  • Experience with youth programs and summer camps preferred 
  • Sensitivity to the needs of low-income and first-college-generation population
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check) and a SORI.

    Shift Information:  

    -Program Dates: June 21, 2024 - August 2, 2024 (residency required)

    -Shift information: Residential, Monday-Friday, occasional night and weekend shifts.

    Compensation:

    Residential Counselors/Mentors are eligible to earn a stipend of up to $4,000, paid in bi-weekly installments.  (Program is closed July 4-July 5). Additional Dates: Two pre-summer planning meetings and two post-summer evaluation dates are required.

    In addition to earning a stipend, housing is provided for the full duration of the employment term, and a full meal plan is provided during staff training, student meal periods, and evaluation days. Meals will not be provided on the weekends and when the program is closed (approx. value: $2,680.)
