Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. Job Summary

Under supervision, perform a full range of kitchen, customer areas, and bathrooms cleaning tasks. Wash pots, dishes and equipment by hand and with industrial dishwashers. Use hand tools to sweep, mop, clean bathrooms, dust, polish silverware, and vacuum. May work individually or as part of a group. Position is Per Diem on-call and without standardized schedule. Perform a full range of cleaning & organizing tasks in kitchen, customer areas, bathrooms, interior & exterior docks areas & other areas. Wash pots, pans, food preparation bowls & dishes. Support work stations & production kitchen areas with waste & cardboard sorting & removal. Ensure all hand washing & bathroom areas are fully stocked, clean & ready to use. Operate various unit equipment & machinery, dishes & glassware, utensils & tools with care. Utilize hand tools, sweep, mop, dust, polish silverware, vacuum, sort, organize & wash equipment & dishes or areas of the facility. Work with various pieces of industrial level dishwashers & cleaning equipment following operating guidelines provided by manufacturer. Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks to all equipment & areas assigned, following deep cleaning schedules & processes established by the SOP provided for each area of responsibility. Maintain general security of the Unit food, equipment & supplies. Sweep, mop & spot mop stains/spillage from floors. Strip/wax floors. Remove cobwebs from buildings. Dust, clean, & polish equipment, furniture, walls, light fixtures, window blinds, window sills, vent grills & elevators. Clean & disinfect restrooms, waste receptacles, drinking fountains, partitions & doors. Fill soap & paper dispensers. Empty & clean trash & recycling receptacles. Operate power equipment safely, including vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuums, floor buffers, floor scrubbers, polishing machines, carpet extractors, shampoo machines, etc. Organize, clean & maintain adequate supply closets.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position requires frequent daily bending, stooping, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling, walking, standing, and lifting material and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. Some tasks may have a high rate of repetition, making the same motion or use of a tool (with the force of up to 25 pounds) up to 3 hours at a time (between regularly scheduled breaks). Use of a ladder when retrieving items from high shelves. Use of various industrial kitchen equipment such as; ranges, ovens, slicers, mixers, grill during the course of scheduled shift. Stand continuously (up to 8hrs with regularly scheduled breaks). Work with constant interruptions, distractions, and noise. Work in an environment of high heat and humidity (up to 8 hours with regularly scheduled breaks).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • THIS IS A PER DIEM APPOINTMENT: There is no permanent schedule or shift assigned; work hours will vary based on operational needs. Schedules and shifts are based as needed on a day-to-day basis when necessary to supplement University career staffing.
  • Work flexible/variable schedule (sometimes in excess of scheduled shift) including occasional overtime, evenings/nights, weekends and holidays, occasionally on short notice to meet operational needs. Vacation may be limited during peak operational times.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment [PPE] such as hot mitts, safety shoes, goggles and cut resistant gloves.
  • Work in areas where there is frequent contact with residents and guests and that can be hot, cold, dusty, wet and/or smelly.
  • This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, at no charge to the applicant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Customer service experience in a retail and/or food service setting to cooperate with public and other staff members and convey a helpful, positive attitude.
  • Experience washing pots/pans/dishes in a service-oriented setting.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining sanitation and safety of a retail or food service environment.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Skills to communicate in English, both orally and in written form to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and interact effectively with co-workers, supervisors and guests.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for lifting, handling broken glass and skill to use wet floor signs when mopping floors of cleaning up spills.
  • Skill to verify proper concentration of sterilized solution using test strips.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:           

  • Experience checking food temperatures throughout all HACCP steps including food preparation, meal service, and storage; complete HACCP logs, date, label and store all foods.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Skill to guide a wide range of tasks to student assistants and kitchen support staff.
  • Skills to differentiate products’ composition, biodegradability, nutrition, etc.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with and provide excellent customer service to a diverse campus community; communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Problems solving skills to troubleshoot problems as they arise, find alternate solutions, and implement solutions in a processional and efficient manner.
