Friday Harbor Laboratories has an outstanding opportunity for a Food Service Manager to join their tight knit team in Friday Harbor, WA.

This position directs the Friday Harbor Laboratories Food Services program, which provides full meal service to course students; workshop, conference, and field trip participants; and visiting scientists and scholars at FHL. Ensure quality of meals and customer service while maintaining a financially sound budget for this self-sustaining, standalone program.  Oversee all aspects of the program, including hiring and scheduling staff, planning meals, placing food orders, managing kitchen equipment maintenance, ensuring compliance with food safety standards, and monitoring salary and other expenses to stay within budget.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise FHL Food Services staff (40%)
• Manage the FHL Food Services budget, ensuring that expenses do not exceed revenues from Dining Hall patrons while maintaining meal prices as low as possible (20%)
• Plan menus and corresponding food purchases for regular full meal service, visiting groups, and special events, including the provision of modified meals for individuals according to specific food preferences and restrictions (10%)
• Hire FHL Food Services staff and maintain records (10%)
• Purchase food, beverages, chemicals, and general supplies according to needs; record product deliveries; oversee invoices for purchases (10%)
• Monitor equipment, including scheduling of regular maintenance and purchasing of replacement items as needed (5%)
• Ensure compliance with current health and safety regulations; meet with UW EHS Food Safety to discuss requirements and with SJ County Health & Community Services for annual inspections (5%)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree in any field and 2+ years of relevant experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Proficiency in MS Office programs, including Word and Excel
• Proven skills in clear written communication
• Proven skills in using administrative systems

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Supervisory experience
• Direct customer service experience
• Administrative experience
