Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science and History at Fayetteville State University invites applications for a Fixed-Term Lecturer of Philosophy to begin in August 2024. Fayetteville State University is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina and the Second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state. To be eligible for the Lecturer position, the candidate must hold a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Philosophy. Founded in 1867 as the Howard School for the education of African Americans, today FSU serves a growing student body of approximately 7,000 and ranks among the nation’s most diverse campus communities.
Description of Work Continued:
The Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science and History offers a variety of bachelor’s degrees in political science, history, geospatial science, and intelligence studies, along with several minor options, including a minor in Philosophy. Responsibilities of faculty include teaching at the undergraduate level, research, and service to the university and to the community. The successful candidate will be offered opportunity to teach several sections of critical thinking. The university has established the Gillis-Jones Institute for Ethics and Leadership with the aim of making the philosophical discussion of ethics central to the university’s mission. The proposed institute will be housed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the candidate will be expected to teach ethics courses or team teach them with other faculty. Further, the IGPH Department intends to offer a Certificate in Ethics to give students multiple pathways to explore meaningful ethical and practical questions. Thus, the candidate’s contribution to the development of the proposed certificate program will be invaluable. In addition to instruction, duties will include service to the university and the profession. Candidates must have experience with online education at the college level. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • To be eligible for the Lecturer position, the candidate must hold a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Philosophy.
  • Experience with teaching various formats (seated, online, synchronous, and asynchronous).

  • Experience teaching logic and ethics courses would be useful.
