The Fitness & Wellness Program Coordinator for Campus Recreation is responsible for all facets of developing, administering, organizing, marketing, and assessing fitness and wellness programs leading a comprehensive annual calendar of diverse activities that reflect the needs, interests, and desires of the Pitt community. •Core functions include student program leadership and management, staff management and development, administration, and special projects. •Areas of program leadership and coordination include fitness and wellness programs and events, group fitness programs, personal and group training, wellness coaching, outreach and education programs, recreation programs, emerging and collaborative initiatives along with support of department and Wellness Team programs and outreach, and campus-wide events. •Program oversight encompasses operations, assessment, safety and risk management, facility scheduling, recommending and purchasing fitness equipment and related program technology equipment, and managing operational software supporting facilitation of programs and services. Coordinator is responsible for the up-keep and maintenance of program spaces, group fitness equipment, and related technology equipment. •Core functions also include personnel management and development through staff recruiting and hiring, planning and executing robust in-house student employee onboarding and training programs and in-services / workshops, staff evaluations, and student development to enhance the experience and growth of student staff while positively impacting the Campus Recreation environment and service delivery. •Responsible for developing and monitoring the budget for associated programs, and is fully responsible for budget area and stewardship in managing university funds to best meet current and changing needs. •Coordinator is responsible for aligning functions, programs, and work environment with equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility strategies. Coordinator works a varied on-campus schedule, including evenings and weekends to ensure a superior participant and student employee experience. This position requires baccalaureate credentials and/or equivalent education and independent experience. Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, exercise science, health and wellness management, health and physical education, recreation management/administration, or related field, and minimum 3 years of progressive related experience preferably in a higher education environment. Master’s degree preferred. Knowledge of best practices in any/or combination of the areas preferred: collegiate health and well-being frameworks; fitness and recreation programming; training of instructors and personal trainers. Experience leading classes, personal training, and/or wellness coaching preferred. Knowledge of current safety and risk management protocols; and leadership development. Current First Aid/ CPR/ AED certification or obtained within 6 months of hiring. Prefer nationally recognized certification with any of the following organizations: American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), International Sports Science Association (ISSA), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills; ability to lead and mentor students; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities with successful outcomes. Familiarity with Microsoft Office software. Prefer experience with Fusion, Connect2Concepts, SubItUp, and related Campus Recreation management software.



Job Summary

Creates and implements high-risk intramural, club, fitness, and recreation programs. Creates and implements facilities operations plans including staffing, facilities scheduling, and facility, FFE, and fitness equipment maintenance. Develops program or facility operational mapping to align with strategic plans. Develops policies and procedures guiding operations and continuous improvement efforts. Develops and implements risk management protocols and training to ensure safety. Manages marketing, social media outreach, and updates web site.


Essential Functions 

- Autonomously creates, develops, organizes, and administers fitness, wellness and recreation programs as part of the campus recreation team. - Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises large student staff to lead program activities. - Develops success metrics, and mechanisms for evaluating and reporting success. Makes improvements based on data findings. - Assesses risk related to program and facility operations, staffing, and maintenance. Creates and implements risk management procedures and guidelines training staff to ensure compliance. For example, ensures the safety of participants through the maintenance and quality of equipment, proper staff coverage, and safe playing conditions at all activities and facilities. Develops and monitors risk management procedures, protocols, and training to minimize University exposure to legal liability. - Creates programs that support achievement of University, Wellness Team, and department mission in serving the university community as a whole and supporting student well-being and development. Reviews and analyzes new and current programming; based on assessment, updates program operations to ensure customer satisfaction, continual improvement, and alignment with current and future trends. - Develops and monitors the budget for associated program operations. Fully responsible for budget area and stewardship in managing university funds to best meet current and changing needs. Prepares reports to share and review with leadership identifying opportunities for savings as well as assessing and planning for future budget needs. - Updates website and manages marketing and social media outreach. - The job duties outlined in this job description include common job responsibilities for this title and level of jobs and are not intended to cover every duty. Physical Effort 

Work includes both administrative office tasks as well as extensive work in high-use, participant-centric fitness and recreation facilities requiring routine mobility within the office, the facilities (indoor and outdoor recreation spaces and sports fields), and around campus. Involves routinely moving throughout spaces (100 plus yards multiple times per shift), climbing ladders, and moving to and from facilities. Work includes lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling/moving items (e.g., supplies, equipment, deliveries, etc.) up to 50 pounds. Occasionally needs to lift, carry, and pull/pull/move more than 50 pounds.
