JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   The Fitness Coordinator assists in the organization and administration of all aspects of the Fitness program and the Instructional Programs. This position supervises Group Exercise Instructors, Personal Fitness Trainers, and Demonstration Teachers and assists the Associate Director of Campus Recreation in developing Fitness Center policies and procedures. This is an on-campus position primarily located in UT Health Science Center recreation facilities. This position may include frequent nights and weekends and may cover other positions in UTHSC Campus Recreation according to departmental needs.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Serves as the primary point of contact at the fitness center desk, oversees general operations of the fitness center, monitors equipment, and works with business staff to ensure equipment replacement per schedule.

2.      Schedules and supervises the group exercise program, student employees, personal trainers, and instructional program instructors.

3.      Leads weekly exercise classes.

4.      Schedules and conducts training sessions with members of all ages, fitness levels and of varying health status.  

5.      Works with some member's medical team to determine what type of exercise is appropriate due to pre-existing risk factors as determined by the American College of Sports Medicine.

6.      Performs risk management procedures; supervises weight room, cardiovascular room and three exercise studios; develops/updates policies and guidelines for use of all exercise rooms and studios.

7.      Oversees and assists with the cleaning and maintenance of all exercise and sound equipment, general repair of cardiovascular machines, resistance training and sound equipment.

8.      Conducts training classes for group exercise instructors and personal trainers, fitness testing; schedules professional organizations to conduct certifications and workshops in aerobics, step kickboxing weight training, personal training, etc.; maintains records on all exercise leaders and trainers ensuring certifications are current.

9.      Develops/updates staff manuals for fitness instructors and personal trainers.

10.  Organizes and completes payroll time sheets for fitness instructors, demonstration teachers, and personal trainers.

11.  Perform other duties as required.  

 



Qualifications

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree. (Master’s Degree preferred) (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) 

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience organizing, planning, and implementing wellness, outdoor recreation, aquatics, intramural sports, and recreational sports as well as wellness and special events in a college or university setting; OR Master’s Degree and one (1) year of experience. CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or willing to complete within three months.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

·         Knowledge of programming for students, faculty, staff, faculty use, activities, sports and fitness.

·         Knowledge of management and operation of recreation facilities and equipment.

·         Ability to design and market fitness center and campus recreation programs.

·         Knowledge of campus recreation and intramural software programs.

·         Ability to research fitness equipment and materials and website knowledge.

·         Good written and oral communication skills.

·         Recreational and fitness knowledge. 

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may frequently be required to work weekends and evenings. May require occasional overnight travel.
