Position Summary |
The Fitness Coordinator is under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of University Recreation and has direct responsibility for all aspects of day-to-day Fitness programming and operations to include Personal and Small Group Training, Group Fitness, paid programs and other offerings. The coordinator will serve with a student-centered approach that contributes to a caring and safe campus life environment that supports the holistic success of students through professional development, leadership and Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities |
Personnel and Leadership Development
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, develop and evaluate Fitness staff student and non-student/part-time employees, including Fitness Trainers, Facility Attendants, and Undergraduate Assistants.
- Coordinate the scheduling of all staff to ensure adequate coverage
- Develop and implement in-services for Fitness staff following industry best practices with a strong emphasis on skill-development, transferable work skills, staff empowerment, diversity and leadership.
- Coordinate with University Recreation staff and other constituents on and off campus to ensure quality Fitness programs are offered.
- Enforce and communicate university and department policies with employees and patrons
Operations
- Oversee the daily, weekly and monthly operations, maintenance and upkeep of Fitness facilities and equipment to include
o Preventative maintenance of the Fitness Center, Fitness Studios, and Functional Training Room spaces and equipment. o Working with the Assistant Director and Associate Director to develop annual maintenance plans, long-term projects and replacement schedules
- Oversee the Fitness budgets, including payroll, program/maintenance expenses, and tracking revenue, and prepare future budget requests with Assistant Director.
- Coordinate with other University Recreation staff the use and scheduling of all recreational facilities and APSU Facilities Office for other spaces.
Programming
- Oversee all programs and offerings within the Fitness program area to include
o Developing the fitness schedule each semester (10-20 classes/week) o Managing and continuously assessing Personal and Small Group Training programs o Developing, implementing and evaluating various programs such as Aerial Silks, Boot Camp, workshops and fitness events.
- Design and/or assist with marketing of Fitness programs/offerings as needed.
- Enter and update all programs into the Fusion software system for registrations, sales and coordinate with University Recreation staff for the use, and scheduling of all recreational facilities.
- Create, identify, and assess program goals and student learning outcomes in support of University and Division missions and strategic plans.
- Monitor the industry trends for programming, new and inclusive activities, and to inform future decisions.
- Department and Division
- Work with all APSU University Recreation professional staff to advance the department and division’s vision, mission, core values, and strategic plan.
- Work to support the overall mission of University Recreation, Student Affairs, and APSU including active participation in University Recreation and campus-wide campaigns, initiatives, projects, and committees.
- Maintain a functioning knowledge of operations and procedures for all areas of University Recreation.
- Remain competent and current through professional development to include self-directed research, participation in professional organizations, and networking with colleagues.
- Collaborate with constituents in University Recreation, APSU departments, and the local community.
- Coordinate timely and accurate preparation of reports.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience teaching fitness classes, personal training and/or small group training, and developing and/or supervising fitness instructors/personal trainers;
- Knowledge of best practices within the fitness field
- Skills that exemplify collaboration, communication
- Ability to lead, develop and work with a diverse staff
- Advanced oral and written communication skills
- Ability to administer multiple deadlines and tasks
- Valid driver’s license.
- A background check will be required of the successful applicant
Preferred skills and qualifications:
- Nationally accredited fitness certification(s) for Group Fitness/Personal Training, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, or other nationally accredited/recognized specialty certifications
- Red Cross Instructor or Instructor Trainer for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED
