The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Office is committed to preserving the university’s tradition of academic and research excellence through innovative EH&S leadership. The EH&S Team provides support and services for a customer base comprised of faculty, staff, students, contractors and visitors. As a member of the EH&S Team, the Fire Safety Officer provides support to and oversight of the university’s Fire and Life Safety Program. The main focus of the position is to develop and implement fire and life safety programs, procedures and guidelines that satisfy the fire code, legal obligations, and insurance requirements aimed at preventing loss of life, injury, and property damage due to fire and other emergencies. The Fire Safety Officer carries out assigned tasks in a manner that aspires to promoting a culture consistent with the following EH&S Office goals: 1) Safe work practices; 2) Healthy work spaces; and 3) Environmental stewardship. Our challenge is to maintain balance between understanding the requirements for controlling hazards and embracing the business climate in which we are working while striving to continuously improve our services to meet our customers’ needs.
Position Summary
The Fire Safety Officer administers assigned fire safety and other related EH&S programs that may include conducting fire evacuation drills; hot work activities oversight; open flame/burn permit approval and issuance, conducting building safety audits/inspections; oversight of fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance; building evacuation maps management; training development and delivery; coordinating fire safety aspects for special events; fire protection system impairment coordination; fire and life safety input into facilities planning and design; accident/incident investigation; contracts administration; fire control zone monitoring; fire safety technical advice/assistance; providing recommendations to correct unsafe practices and develop continuous improvement solutions; recordkeeping tasks; data analysis and trending; and tracking corrective actions to satisfactory closure. The Fire Safety Officer offers primarily specialized technical support in response to customer needs through application of practical knowledge of Fire Safety processes that requires independent thinking and professional judgment to assess problems and formulate solutions. The Fire Safety Officer recommends procedural and/or resource changes to the Director, EH&S when deemed appropriate for continuous improvement of fire safety services delivery. Expected performance results are to reduce imminent danger and/or violation of fire safety standards/occupational safety issues that affect the safety and well-being of the W&M community and to assist the Director with improving university fire safety posture. The Fire Safety Officer shall make teamwork and service a priority in the execution of assigned responsibilities and shall perform all EH&S tasks safely with professionalism and integrity.

This position has been designated as essential to the operation of the department and may require reporting to work when the University is officially closed and is subject to additional hours.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Safety, Occupational Safety, Chemistry, Physics or other related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years or more of previous related work experience.
  • Experience developing, writing, and implementing fire prevention and life safety programs/policies and guidance documents.
  • Experience conducting accident/incident investigation and workplace inspections.
  • Documented completion of Incident Command System training IS-700 and ICS-100 or must be able to successfully complete these courses within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience maintaining recordkeeping systems, performing data management tasks and analyzing data for trends using mathematical formulas.
  • Ability to promote EH&S programs and initiatives through newsletters, lessons learned shearing, blogs and other communication means.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively both as a member of the EH&S Team and/or as a member of a cross-functional team.
  • Valid Driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Safety, Occupational Safety, Chemistry, Physics or other related field.
  • Ten or more years’ experience in fire, life safety and fire-related EH&S program management. Prior experience in a university, research facility or hospital setting.
  • Virginia Fire Marshal’s Academy (VFMA) Inspector 1031 and/or VFMA Fire and Life Safety Educator 1035 certification, Certified Fire Protection Specialist or equivalent with experience with review/enforcement of IFC or IBC requirements.
  • Documented completion of Incident Command System training ISC-200 and ISC-800.
  • Basic CPR/AED/BFA and/or CPR/AED/BFA Instructor certification.
