  • Occasional travel required.

Job Summary
Support the Environmental Health & Safety Office mission by assisting with the Fire and Life Safety Program as directed. Support Fire and Life Safety Program. Conduct building and housing unit inspections per assigned schedule to address fire prevention, life safety code issues, and adequacy of fire and life safety systems and equipment. Issue hot work permits, review and approve plans for special campus event activities (i.e., egress requirements, tent permits, stage permits, outdoor grill use, etc.). Conduct incident investigations. Document and maintain appropriate, accurate, and complete records of inspections, corrective actions, investigations, and other Fire and Life Safety Program related records as directed. Manage and populate pre-planning database/software and coordinate emergency pre-planning with first responders and other stakeholders. Gather information, determine areas of potential improvement, and implement those improvements to facilitate emergency response.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Educate and support the campus community regarding pre-planning, fire safety, emergency procedures, etc. as directed.
  • Provide technical guidance to faculty, staff, and students related to fire safety, prevention, and/or emergency procedures.
  • Participate in tabletop and/or live emergency exercise trainings as directed.
  • Develop, update, coordinate, and present fire safety or other related training such as fire extinguisher, fire drills, Great Escape, and hot work training, emergency procedures, etc.
  • Document and maintain appropriate, accurate, and complete training records as required/directed. 
  • Develop, review, and update Fire & Life Safety Program related policies, procedures, manuals, standard operating procedures, inspection criteria, training, forms, etc.
  • Review plans and specifications for renovation and new construction projects to ensure compliance with NFPA codes and provide written comments.
  • Review and calculate classroom/laboratory/assembly occupancy loads.
  • Assist with outside agency reporting requirements such as Campus Fire Statistics Report, etc.
  • Respond to fire alarms and assist with campus fire and life safety systems as directed during working hours to facilitate campus operations. (i.e., fire alarm device disabling, etc.).
  • Support University events as directed (inspecting, monitoring, performing fire watch, etc.).
  • Assist with other Fire & Life Safety Program and EH&S department projects as assigned.
  • Must drive a University vehicle.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in fire prevention or fire safety engineering with three (3) years of experience in fire prevention and protection, including expertise in inspection, code review, and/or pre-incident planning or equivalent relevant experience.
  • NFPA Fire Inspector I (CFI-I) certification or equivalent. 
  • Experience conducting fire safety training and education programs.
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety standards to include application of local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, standards, specifications, and policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NFPA Fire Inspector II (CFI-II) certification or greater and/or further study at the undergraduate level.
  • Two (2) or more years of administrative experience overseeing a fire safety program of similar size and scope.
  • Project management skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple tasks, with good follow-through.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to take direction. 
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts, and best practices in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to fire safety program operations.
  • Ability to use safety and investigating equipment, including fire extinguishers, oxygen analyzers, gas and toxic materials detectors and personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to utilize computer hardware, devices, and software for inspections, permits, pre-planning, task and project management, etc. 
  • Ability to work independently or with small groups without direct supervision.
  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain Forty (40) hour HAZWOPER Certification. 
  • Ability to pass a pulmonary function test and be medically cleared to wear a respirator.
  • Ability to support University events, as necessary, including those outside of normal business hours.
