JOB SUMMARY

The primary purpose of this position is to provide quality financial aid service to Hamline University students and with specific responsibility for financial aid packaging, federal verification and assistance with VA certifications.   The Financial Aid Counselor is also responsible administering a variety of Minnesota state programs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with customer service to undergraduate and graduate students and families.

  • Manage and calculate financial aid packages for students in undergraduate programs.

  • Processing of state programs including but not limited to, MN Postsecondary Childcare Grant, MN Indian Scholarship, MN Get Ready, and MN Fostering Independence Grant

  • Manage and complete federal file verification.

  • Assist with military and VA certifications. 

  • Facilitate the review and updates needed for third party scholarships and third-party vendor payments (sponsored contracts).

  • Maintain current knowledge of Federal and State regulations as well as institutional policies and procedures. Advise the Director and Associate Directors on matters pertaining to undergraduate populations.

  • All other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the:  Associate Director of Financial Aid

This position does not supervise other employees.

This position does not supervise student workers.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Budget Range: This position is not responsible for the management of a budget.



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Working as an effective team member.

  • Being self-motivated to initiate and complete individual projects.  

  • Ability to be flexible in daily scheduling, yet structured enough to complete projects by required deadlines. 

  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • 1-2 years of experience in customer service, or related experience in higher education, financial services, or a closely related field.

  • Direct financial aid experience with an institution of higher education.

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

None required.

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT

Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Lifting at least 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

  • Working on a computer for long periods of time.

  • Travelling to locations both on and off campus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This is a full time, 1.0 FTE, non-exempt position, 12 months a year.

  • Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.
