Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC Greensboro enriches the lives of diverse individuals and connects multiple communities, both on and off-campus, by presenting, interpreting, and collecting modern and contemporary art. In recognizing its paramount role of public service, the Weatherspoon fosters an appreciation of the ability of art to positively impact lives. WAM is internationally known for its collections of American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper and for its exhibitions that help broaden the story of American art to be more inclusive of women and artists of color. History The Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC Greensboro was founded by Gregory Ivy in 1941 and is the earliest of any art facility within the UNC system. The museum was founded as a resource for the campus, community, and region and its early leadership developed an emphasis—maintained to this day—on presenting and acquiring modern and contemporary works of art. The Weatherspoon also is known for its dynamic exhibition program. Through a lively annual calendar of exhibitions and a multi-disciplinary educational program for audiences of all ages, the museum provides an opportunity for visitors to consider artistic, cultural, and social issues of our time—enriching the life of our university, community, and region.
Position Summary
This position will administer and manage the business and financial affairs of a department/unit. Responsibilities include facilitation and management of financial resources that may be state-appropriated, contracts and grants, and donor revenue generated. The Finance Manager develops and monitors the museum’s operating budget and works with the director to create future projections. Responsible for a range of financial and business-related duties, including financial management, personnel administration/management, grants administration, payroll, purchasing, inventory control, facilities coordination/planning, information technology assessment/planning, and closely related work. This position may perform or have oversight of accounts reconciliation, maintenance, and reporting of financial data analysis. Managing expenses/revenue, endowments, personnel planning, capital projects, and facilities management. Includes responsibility for accounting/business standards and practices, policy interpretation/implementation, departmental work, and the supervision of others as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.A. in accounting or business management or the equivalent in relevant experience and education. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Five years of experience in budget preparation and management.
  • High level of technical competency in accounting and related financial accounting systems proficiencies.
  • Demonstrated strategic, analytical, and innovative thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated precision, accuracy, and attention to detail on all fiscal matters.
  • Organized and able to set priorities, managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Team-oriented problem solver, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills while being fully able to contribute individually.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with appropriate discretion.
  • Experience in human resource management.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse and equitable working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
