Job Description Summary:
Founded in 1824, the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is the 11th oldest medical school in the country and the first in the nation’s capital. Since its establishment, the school has been at the forefront of medical education, and has grown to include highly-ranked programs in the health and biomedical sciences. The Finance Director I oversees the comprehensive financial affairs of a school or division and the day-to-day financial operations, including management and analysis of budgets, financial results, and all other regulatory compliance.
This role supports the Assistant Dean for Finance, Planning and Fiscal Operations with research finance, endowment investment and compliance, capital budgeting and funding, financial management of shared services & infrastructure, audits and funds flow with clinical partners. This role supports the school as the financial steward for assigned areas within SMHS and the MFA.
This position provides strategic planning, direction, and advisory responsibilities for the areas of finance, operations and budget. This role directs, plans, and manages the comprehensive financial aspects of assigned areas across the academic medical enterprise. The core responsibilities are to direct and manage fiscal operations – including budget calls, quarterly updates, forecasts and other reports, benchmarking, accounting, asset management, procurement, and payroll, including on-going achievement of financial goals and objectives measurements, to provide proactive and strategic advice to leadership on business and financial matters, and to budget, monitor, and assess the effective and efficient use of operating, research, and reserve funds. This role develops annual and multi-year budget projections to guide leadership decision-making, and is charged with improving financial status by analyzing results and variances, identifying trends, and recommending actions. Prepares underlying data and responds to questions originating from various offices within SMHS and across the university.
Key responsibilities for assigned areas:
  • Provide guidance and oversight of day to day financial operations.
  • Establish business and administrative mission and goals in partnership with the Assistant Dean.to advocate the unit’s needs and goals to internal and external parties.
  • Directly manage and monitor the assigned budgets (including all funds) to achieve margin target goals. Design reports to fill gaps in decision support, analyze operational and financial reports to identify progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Identify gaps, develop, implement and monitor process for financial oversight of activities including research finance to meet operational and financial goals.
  • Work in partnership with research administration services for all extramural research processes, including clinical trials, grant submissions and post award activities to ensure research revenue is optimized and funds applied appropriately
  • Evaluate business processes and operational and/or financial effectiveness. Work collaboratively with colleagues in the productivity and efficiency of operations for the purpose of ensuring performance, achievement of goals and efficiencies.
  • Identify, problem solve and resolve issues advising senior leadership when appropriate.
  • Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with financial and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Recommend procedural and/or policy changes and enhancements to improve budget management, and other related business activities.
  • Responsible for all aspects of internal controls throughout departments, particularly in the area of cash management (deposits), billing, and procurement. Recommend, establish, implement and monitor the application of internal controls.
  • Manage billing and/or accounts receivable activities.
  • Performs special projects and participates in working groups related to strategic initiatives, data managements and process improvements

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience with higher education accounting/finance.
  • Experience with EAS, and Banner.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
