Film Conservator

Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Time-based Media Conservator in Media Preservation Services of the Harvard Library, the Film Conservator is responsible for the processing, inspection and preliminary cataloging of new acquisitions and the preparation of outgoing films for the Harvard Film Archive (HFA) and other Harvard Library repositories. Assists in the planning and execution of collection-wide preservation projects for audiovisual materials. Prepares materials and performs archival film scanning. Assists patrons and library colleagues who need to view films. 


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and antiracism.  

  • Formal training or degree in Film Preservation preferred.  

  • Film projection experience and working knowledge of film cataloging tools preferred. 

  • Knowledge of current film digitization workflows and practices preferred. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. 

  • Ability to repair and maintain film equipment preferred. 

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. 

  • Experience arranging and processing archival collections. 

  • Experience using FileMaker and other database software to manage metadata. 

  • Experience working with large datasets in Excel and Google sheets. 

  • Experience working with and performing post-digitization quality control and editing of digital files. 


Work Format Details

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
