Position Overview
This fieldwork opportunity is designed to provide relevant experience for an MLIS student interested in academic librarianship, preferably in a research, teaching, and learning public area. 10-15 hours per week.
Most of the work will focus on helping the RTL department develop a FAQ repository and utilizing data pulled from SpringShare’s platform and LibraryH3lp Chat to determine the types of questions asked and potential responses.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position includes working in some or all of the following areas:
  • Utilizing the SpringShare platform to review and analyze transactions recorded from the Library Services Desk.
    • Conduct a literature review focusing on best practices around the development and on-going updates to academic library’s FAQs.
    • Review and clean up the data.
    • Organize and strategize the types of questions and potential responses.
    • Identify areas for training improvement (e.g., how to answer and categorize questions for library staff and students; utilize the information to identify potential tutorials).
    • Develop skills related to answering questions from various patrons at an academic library.
  • Opportunities to serve at the Library Services Desk.
    • Provide research assistance via chat, email, phone, and in-person.
  • Observe library information literacy sessions.
    • Plan and present a library information literacy session for First Year English Students and present to members of the RTL department.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Experience with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Basic course work in Library and Information Science, including information literacy, information retrieval and research.
  • Understanding of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
  • Experience with the SpringShare platform.
