Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and possession of a valid driver’s license, current vessel operator license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with oceanic instrumentation, data logger programming and general coastal/oceanic field equipment deployments and operations is highly preferred. Small vessel operation, diving and basic computer programming is preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s department of Marine and Environmental Sciences is seeking to hire a Field Engineer, Alabama Real-time Coastal Observing System (ARCOS). Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Essential Functions


These are the job duties required of the position.


Essential Functions
  • Maintains the Alabama Real-time Coastal Observing System (ARCOS) and provides support services for other instrumentation and platforms (e.g., moorings, ocean glider).
  • Performs programming, calibrating, and general servicing of stations, their instrumentation, infrastructure, and telemetry equipment.
  • Provides support services for ocean glider operations (deployment, servicing, or more as required).
  • May perform data analysis and creation of products leveraging the ARCOS data streams.
  • Processes data such as conducting quality control from the different observation platforms (e.g. buoy sensors, glider sensors, fixed platforms) that requires the use of Matlab or Python programs.
  • Develops new sensor arrays that may require the use of Arduino components.
  • Documents and reports instrumentation performance and reporting utilizing Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Provides engineering designs for ocean moorings and oceanic equipment frames utilizing SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software.
  • Fabricates components for ocean deployment of instruments and sensor packages utilizing SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software.
  • Builds and fabricates components of different projects using a CC machine, laser cutter and 3-D printer.
  • Carries various equipment that weighs up to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
