Faculty Professor Teaching Assistant - Full-Time
Urban Studies - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (23009301)

The Law, Criminal Justice, and Society (LCJS) Program at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time, appointment-stream Teaching Assistant Professor beginning in the 2024-25 academic year, with a preference for someone with at least 3 years of experience teaching undergraduate students on a full-time basis. This is an online teaching position. The teaching load is a 3-3, including the following courses in the first year: two asynchronous sections of Law & Deviance (LCJS 1310), two asynchronous sections of Introduction to Law, Criminal Justice, & Society (LCJS 0100), and two synchronous sections of the writing-intensive capstone, Ethics in Criminal Justice (LCJS 1700). The successful candidate will fully develop LCJS 1310 in conformity with the high standards of the College of General Studies’ online learning program; looking ahead to AY25-26, the successful candidate will do the same for Law & Social Change (LCJS 1340).

Having launched in the Fall of 2021, the LCJS undergraduate program has grown to 370 majors across the College of General Studies (CGS) and the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences (DSAS). We are interested in welcoming a teaching-oriented colleague who has training as well as research and teaching experience at the intersection of law, social science, and the criminal legal system, and who can help our students develop their ability to think conceptually, theoretically, and otherwise rigorously about the criminal legal system in a larger social context. We are especially interested in a scholar who can help further strengthen our collaborative relationship with the Urban Studies Program. Experience teaching classes related to cybercrime would be a plus. We look forward to welcoming a colleague who is committed above all to excellence in teaching, including the ongoing research necessary for the fulfillment of that commitment.

Required Qualifications:

· A Ph.D. in a social science discipline.

· At least 3 years of full-time undergraduate teaching experience

· Interest in and ability to teach a wide range of courses at the intersection of law, social science, and criminal justice

· Experience with online instruction and a strong commitment to online course development and innovation

· Strong commitment to continuous pedagogical improvement and to working effectively with diverse undergraduate student audiences, including nontraditional and adult students

Desired Additional Qualifications:

· Post-graduate training in law, especially law & social science

· High capacity and desire to work collaboratively, including with the CGS online instructional design team

Responsibilities for AY24-25:

· teach 2 online sections of LCJS 100 (Intro to LCJS) [fall, spring], and suggest/implement content revisions as merited

· teach 2 synchronous online sections of LCJS 1700 (Ethics in CJ) [fall, spring]

· develop and teach 2 online sections of LCJS 1310 (Law & Deviance) [fall, spring]; online course development and training should occur in conjunction with CGS designers prior to the scheduled start date (supplementary compensation for full participation)

· start to develop LCJS 1340 (Law & Social Change) as an online course to be offered in AY25-26.

Uploaded Document Requirements:

· Cover letter addressed to Wes Hiers, Director of LCJS, that summarizes your qualifications for the position

· Current CV

· Teaching Portfolio that includes a teaching statement concerning online pedagogy, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and an abbreviated syllabus for 1 or 2 courses that includes course description as well as goals and assessments/requirements.

· Diversity Statement, in which you share how your past, planned, or potential contributions or experiences relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion will advance the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to inclusive excellence.
