Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes required orientation program and unit-specific staff nurse 1 competencies for the access coordinator, pre coordinator, post coordinator, and infusion RN for the outpatient transplant program. The extra help staff nurse 1 may support nursing duties for the kidney, liver, kidney/pancreas or small bowel transplant programs.
  • Provides post donor follow up care as needed.
  • Pre-scheduled to float to the assignment of need within the transplant department to perform extra help staff nurse 1 duties in the transplant clinic and in the transplant program.
  • Develops and coordinates the patient's plan of care based on ongoing assessment of the patient and input from the patient's family. Plans, implements and documents patient and family education.
  • Assesses, plans and evaluates interventions for patients in the clinic or for those followed remotely.
  • Uses clinical expertise to recognize symptoms, establish priorities and respond to patients changing needs to improve patient outcomes.
  • Consults with and implements orders from physicians by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and accurately documents in the electronic medical record.
  • Assesses, engages and obtains clinical information from multi-disciplinary team, patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • Engages nursing and support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback
  • Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health's values through teamwork and effective communication in an effort to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Monitors/follows up on diagnostic studies and communicates results with provider as needed.
  • Answers patient phone and/or Mychart requests.
  • Facilitates prescription renewals.
  • Communicates and escalates patient issues/concerns to transplant physicians and multidisciplinary team. Ensures that all transplant coordination activities are aligned with CMS and UNOS regulations.
  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide “quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.
  • Recognizes and supports Shared Leadership as the selected method of nursing governance.
  • Participates in organizational, departmental and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.
  • Initiates, conducts and analyzes evidence based practice research to improve patient care outcomes.
  • Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    Spanish Speaking preferred
