At UNM Health, pharmacists are an essential part of your care team. New Mexico is one of only four states that allow pharmacists to prescribe medication. Our clinical pharmacists are certified to prescribe medications, including birth control and naloxone, and give vaccinations. We work with your primary care provider to give you the safest, most effective care.

Position Summary:
Plans, organizes and directs all pharmacy activities and ensures pharmaceutical needs of patients are attained. Assists medical staff in the development of new dosage forms. Provides consultation services to professional and nursing staff. Maintains, revises and updates the hospital formulary, systems and procedures for drug distribution and inventory control. Ensures adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include: Neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
* MANAGE - Direct, manage and provide professional guidance to Pharmacy Department Units
* COORDINATION - Serve as liaison between the department directors and other hospital administrators/managers in coordinating interdepartmental planning efforts and addressing major issues
* REFERENCE - Maintain a current library of pharmaceutical reference materials; publish and revise hospital formulary
* GOALS - Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and procedures related to pharmaceutical services
* REPORTS - Prepare and maintain a variety of reports; analyze and interpret reports as required; identify and recommend areas of improvement through data research and statistical analysis
* QUALITY - Monitor and evaluate the efficiency of department programs and activities; identifies and recommends areas of improvement
* SUPERVISION - Develop efficient organizational structure. Supervise employees and select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives
* BUDGET - Develop and administer the division's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

5 years directly related experience

Nonessential:
Advanced residency or fellowship or equivalent; 2 years progressive pharmacotherapy practice

Credentials:

* Pharmacist License in New Mexico

Physical Conditions:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
