General Information
The College of Education in collaboration with Rockingham County Public Schools and Blue Ridge Community College is seeking an individual to serve as Executive Director of The Lab School for Innovation and Career Exploration. The position is a twelve-month, full-time, position in the College of Education. The Executive Director of The Lab School for Innovation and Career Exploration will report to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Partnerships.
Purpose
The Commonwealth of Virginia has provided for the establishment of College Partnership Laboratory Schools to provide the following:
Innovation
Provide unique and hands-on learning opportunities. Lab schools can experiment with different subjects, schedules, and experiences for their students.
Partnership
Bring the outside world into the classroom. Businesses, nonprofits, and higher education institutions can all contribute their expertise to educating students in their community.
Quality
Use evidence-based best practices and high standards to give students a best-in-class education.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the facilitator of the lab school in helping develop and implement policies, programs, curriculum activities, and budgets in a manner that promotes the educational development of each student.
  • Conceptualizing the broad goals of the school and plans accordingly and collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total lab school program.
  • Attend student service individual school, systemwide, and state meetings on behalf of The Lab School for Innovation and Career Exploration.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with key individuals from each school site.
  • Communicate regularly with the JMU College of Education, Rockingham County Schools, and Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) to ensure continuity in the model between the schools.
  • Understand and submit any necessary lab school-based reports requested by the partners or in accordance with state mandates.
  • Track student outcomes.
  • Track the fidelity and success of the lab school model.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure accessibility to data needed to conduct research.
  • Support the coordination of clinical placements for JMU teacher education and other JMU and BRCC students and work with appropriate faculty and personnel to support the coordinated field experiences to positively impact university students as well as the students enrolled within the University School.
  • Support the establishment of a comprehensive field experience schedule in alignment with lab school activities.
  • Provide management and administrative oversight of interns and graduate assistants
  • Leverage community to improve learning and achievement of all students by collaborating with families and other community members.
  • Respond to diverse community interests and needs and mobilize community resources to demonstrate and promote ethical standards of democracy, equity, diversity, and excellence.
  • Advocate for students and families to ensure equity.
  • Form and enhance meaningful collaboration and relationships amongst school and community stakeholders.
  • Develop strong community partnerships to help strengthen the community while increasing student academic success.
  • Leverage community partnerships to design and negotiate wrap-around services for student success.
  • Engage in ongoing communication to ensure the community is aware of school resources available for use by the community.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in educational leadership or related field.
  • Professional Virginia educator’s license or eligibility to obtain licensure by September 1, 2024 (required), with Administration/Supervision endorsement (preferred).
  • Demonstrated record of significant leadership and teaching experience, preferably in the PK-12 setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience working with higher education partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving school quality and teacher effectiveness.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
