Takes leadership role in independently managing and developing a large, complex academic or research program of high visibility. Develops vision and establishes agenda to achieve research objectives. Oversees all elements of program administration. Collaborates across multiple research groups. Provides leadership in identifying outreach services. With faculty formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, and develops policies and procedures. Defines and implements publications program in support of the overall program. Is considered a subject matter expert of the organization and is recognized as an expert externally in the field.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Education, and in collaboration with the Chief Education Officer, the Executive Director, Educational Initiatives will assume a pivotal role in providing strategic guidance and comprehensive support to faculty, project collaborators, and external agencies in the management and strategic planning of designated programs within the school of Biological Sciences. Using expert level experience, the Executive Director will focus on educational initiatives, course and curriculum redesign, and the integration of innovative pedagogical techniques and technologies. In collaboration with the Associate Dean and Chief Education Officer, will work with the School of Biological Sciences Development teams to secure funding and expand programs through philanthropic donations, grants, contracts, tuition and training fees.

Working in close collaboration with the Associate Dean of Education, the incumbent will spearhead the development and revision of academic programs and coursework. This includes assessing the feasibility of proposed changes within existing resource constraints, supporting development initiatives and grants aimed at expanding resources to enhance educational outcomes, and overseeing assessment efforts to measure the effectiveness of curriculum and course redesign. The Executive Director will play a critical role in advancing the school's commitment to excellence in education and its continuous pursuit of innovative teaching methodologies. The position develops and cultivates strong long-term partnerships with industry and the start-up and investment communities, fosters cross-campus and cross-institutional collaborations. These activities are in pursuit of promoting UC San Diego and the School of Biological Sciences cutting edge research.This position achieves these goals by using ingenuity, creativity, network relationships, and in-depth knowledge of science, technology, and instruction to seek out, evaluate, and bring together opportunities and people that will result in ground-breaking educational programs. This results in educating the next generation of leaders and scientific entrepreneurs

At the forefront of driving technological transformation in education, the Executive Director leads curriculum re-design projects. Leveraging existing funds, expertise is demonstrated in developing innovative coursework focused on computing technologies. Proficiency extends to creating scalable and advanced lab experiences, capitalizing on technological advancements. With a wealth of experience in working with modern technology, there is a particular adeptness at seamlessly integrating technology into curriculum design. Moreover, experience includes the development of comprehensive resources to bolster and sustain such programs, marking a key contribution to the evolving landscape of education technology. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Academic background and expertise in selected area of research. Advanced theoretical knowledge and/or Master's Degree in biological sciences, or related discipline with experience in project or program management in research.

  • Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution for handling administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. 5-10 years experience independently developing strategic plans for and implementing/operationalizing educational programs.

  • Experience conceptualizing, creating, and implementing new programs; experience expanding and directing existing programs. Experience identifying strategic goals and objectives, planning and implementing strategic actions, and experience assessing success of strategic actions.

  • Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies. 5-10 years or more experience establishing multi-disciplinary, multi-departmental, and multi-institutional work groups, networks, committees, programs, conferences, and panels regarding innovation, entrepreneurship, science/technology, tech commercialization.

  • Expert fundraising experience.

  • Leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies. Broad experience in a leadership position with 5-10 years of management responsibility for operations, budgeting, planning, marketing, fundraising, and personnel management. 5-10 years experience leading an organization, institute, or program devoted to educational and instructional development.

  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and project management skills including the ability to oversee a variety of services, programs, and activities. Proven experience planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating projects with the ability to prioritize multiple and complex responsibilities and to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.

  • Experience independently planning, managing, projecting, and implementing a budget.

  • Expert level experience working with modern technology for curriculum design. Ability to stay abreast of changing technologies and how they can be utilized in Higher Education.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Experience devising and giving presentations to small and large audiences both locally, nationally, and internationally, about complex scientific, business, or bioscience topics to a business/entrepreneurial audience.

  • Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students. Rapport-building skills. Experience independently creating new partnerships and networks; experience building/expanding existing partnerships and networks.

  • Expert negotiation skills. Experience negotiating participation, resources, timeframes, deliverables with a wide variety of constituents, internal and external to UC San Diego including alumni, business leaders, community leaders, start-up entrepreneurs, other organizational leaders, scientific and academic colleagues, across UC San Diego departments, with other universities and foundations, and with corporate partners all over the world.

  • Experience communicating a vision to a high level donor with the goal of translating the meaningful fruition of philanthropy and its importance to UC San Diego and the School of Biological Sciences.

  • Experience conceptualizing innovative approaches to describe the goals of an educational organization, institute, or program, and superb communication skills, persuasion, and passion to describe the importance of technology, entrepreneurship, incubators, and innovation in the education world.

  • Experience leading, organizing, and presenting at regional and national conferences, scientific meetings, panel discussions, etc on the topics of education and instruction.

  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Strong demonstrated knowledge of computer systems and applications, including advanced skills in the use of databases, spreadsheets, word processing, presentation and related software.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $112,100 - $216,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $53.69 - $103.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
