Job Description Summary:
The Office of Communications and Marketing is comprised of a high performing team responsible for advancing the university’s reputation and telling GW’s story through a diverse array of university channels, including digital and web properties and publications, multimedia and web properties, creative services, publications, media relations and paid marketing efforts across the university. This office drives the strategy and tactics for showcasing and raising the visibility of the university’s experts, initiatives, and accomplishments.
The Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Executive Director, Communications and Marketing to lead and strategically direct our communication efforts. This role involves leading various communication channels and working collaboratively within the university’s structure to enhance our external relations. This role represents the most complex non-management communications position at the university. This position creates a communications strategy for the organization, researches, develops, and implements campaigns, and works with leadership and other constituents to communicate and market the unit’s initiatives, programs, accomplishments, and goals to raise profile and awareness of the unit among the community. This role serves as liaison with media relations, and coordinates with the university on communications activities to ensure a consistent and efficient approach to events, initiatives, outreach, and communication.
The Executive Director, Communications and Marketing, GWSPH will strategically direct the communications efforts for the Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) as part of the school’s overall external relations function. This position will lead the school’s communication channels including the website, social media, e-newsletters as well as alumni communications and marketing efforts. This position will also partner with other site owners and managers within the university to design and operate websites and pages within the general structural framework. This is the top managing communications position for a school or division, and typically there is not an additional communications management position in the unit. This is a single incumbent position for a school or division. This position reports to the Vice President, Office of Communication and Marketing.
Responsibilities Include:

Strategic Communications Leadership:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for GWSPH.
  • Align communication efforts with the school’s overall external relations goals.

Lead Communication Channels:
  • Oversee the school’s website, social media platforms, e-newsletters, alumni communications, and marketing efforts.
  • Ensure content is engaging, up-to-date, and effectively reaches target audiences. Market research is conducted to bring forward innovative and best in-class marketing strategies to the GWSPH.

Website Development and Management:
  • Partner with site owners and managers within the university to design and operate web pages.

Team Leadership:
  • Management of a team of 2-3 marketing and promotion professionals.
  • Lead the team’s efforts in marketing and communicating across various platforms, both traditional and non-traditional.

Collaboration and Coordination:
  • Create and drive partnerships with different departments within the university to ensure a cohesive and unified communication strategy.
  • Coordinate with external partners and stakeholders as needed.

Reporting and Analysis:
  • Develop and provide ongoing updates on the effectiveness of communication strategies to the Executive Dean, External Relations.
  • Utilize data and analytics to inform decision-making and strategy adjustments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA or other relevant graduate degree preferred.
  • Experience implementing and developing new systems and/or programs and executing strategies.
  • Experience with Salesforce and Target X CRM/CMS.
  • Experience developing and coordinating customized multi-channel campaigns for individual programs.
  • Experience working within a higher education environment and leading staff located in multiple sites.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, self-motivated, a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication, analytic, budgeting and management skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure, ambiguity, and conflicting goals.
  • Able to interact effectively with a diverse population at all levels, facilitate decision making and conflict resolution, maintain a positive and constructive demeanor treating all staff, students, faculty and vendors with professionalism, courtesy and respect.
  • Self-starter, results oriented leader.
  • Proficient in graphic/art and spreadsheet software.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
