The Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station (CUAES) is vital to New York State agriculture and food security.  Cornell AES contributes to healthy and resilient communities and improves the lives and well-being of people by advancing research on agriculture and food systems, the environment, applied economics, and community and individual development.  The Plant Growth Facility, part of Cornell AES, manages 125 growth chambers that are vital for research and teaching.  Cornell AES has taken on the challenge to boost efficiency and sustainability while cutting costs and improving the growing environment.

What You Will Do

The Equipment Technician will assist the Growth Chamber Supervisor with the scheduling, operation, repair, and maintenance of 130+ environmental plant growth chambers and their related electrical, lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, humidification, dehumidification, carbon dioxide enrichment/depletion and computerized control systems. 

This position requires an individual who is capable of analyzing problems and devising appropriate solutions. Job functions include:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair these controlled environmental chambers for precision agricultural studies.

  • Maintain equipment on a routine basis to extend its operational life.

  • Fabricate and refurbish equipment using metalworking, plumbing, electrical and electronics tools and techniques.

  • Engage appropriate additional service providers as needed.

  • Some chambers are new, while others are over 50 years old; familiarity with a range of chamber technologies, troubleshooting techniques and creative problem solving is required.

  • The individual will actively search out potential problem situations and make proactive changes/adjustments in consultation with the supervisor. 

Work collaboratively and creatively as part of a team that includes other growth chamber technicians, , a growth chamber supervisor, a greenhouse supervisor, and other internal and external parties on special projects such as the design and construction of highly-efficient and maintainable prototype growth chambers and developing SOP’s for testing, and/or production procedures for new and old chamber units. Set up, program and use multi-channel electrical power meters to measure ​the actual energy consumption of existing and prototype chambers.  Manage an extensive parts inventory. Implement and promote sustainable energy efficiency improvements.

This position is a full-time (39 hours/week) position located in Ithaca, New York.

What We Need from You

The successful candidate will have completed Trade/Vocational/Technical School and have one-year minimum experience working in the air conditioning/refrigeration field, and at least two years combined experience working in the air conditioning/refrigeration and/or electrical/electronic or controls fields. The candidate must have a thorough understanding of both areas, as applicable to environmental growth chambers.

  • Must possess, or obtain within one year, and maintain, a Universal EPA certification in refrigerant handling.

  • Must have general experience in electrical wiring, circuitry/soldering, and interpretation of mechanical and electrical drawings.

  • Good troubleshooting ability.

  • Proficiency programming computerized environmental control systems.

  • Proficient in working safely with machine shop equipment and hand tools.

  • Proficiency with computer applications including MS Word and Excel, Outlook, and web browsers.

  • Physically able to work from a ladder or scaffold, regularly lift more than 50 lbs. and work in high temperature conditions.

  • Must be willing to respond for after-hours emergency duty.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid NYS drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience servicing environmental growth chambers.

  • Advanced programming experience with Argus and/or Conviron environmental controls.

  • Horticulture research experience.
