Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations. Position Summary
Up to two positions are available. An Environmental Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands to be assigned in Fort Collins, CO to provide data development and standardization, cartography, spatial analysis, and other GIS support services for a variety of projects within CEMML. Work location is at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid arrangements may be possible.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Must have BA/BS degree in natural resources management, environmental science, geography, geographic information systems (GIS), history, anthropology, computer science or related discipline.
  • Must have five years of demonstrated work experience in environmental related GIS to include data development and maintenance, spatial analysis and cartography. Course work will not be included.
  • Must have demonstrated training and experience using GIS software especially ESRI ArcPro, global positioning system technology, and geospatial technical writing and documentation, along with metadata.
  • Must have superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Travel up to a week in duration to selected military installations may be required for data collection and development.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • MA/MS degree in natural resources management, environmental science, geography, geographic information systems (GIS), history, anthropology, or computer science or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Spatial Data Standards for Facilities, Infrastructure, and Environment (SDSFIE) especially version 4.0.x , or other data standards such as ISO or FGDC.
  • Experience with developing and post processing both vector and raster data, including multi-band aerial imagery, LiDAR elevation DEMs, and/or land cover/vegetation data is a plus.
  • Experience with remote sensing, using ESRI ArcGIS Pro or Erdas Imagine is a plus.
  • Managing spatial data in geodatabases.
  • Knowledge and experience working with the U.S. military is beneficial, as is working in a highly structured environment.
  • Knowledge and experience developing web applications including geo-portal data maintenance, ArcGIS Online and story maps is considered a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with automation processes such as ETL tools, python scripting, R programming, and/or SQL is highly desired.
  • At least 7 years of related work experience is a plus.

  • The Environmental GIS Analyst will provide support to various teams within CEMML, including assistance with data development through data collection, digitization and attribute population. 
  • Download and process data from appropriate sources. 
  • Evaluate data quality as required. 
  • Trouble-shoot technical issues, learn new software/technology and develop best techniques for GIS processes. 
  • Possible travel to military installations for field data collection using global positioning system technology may be required.
