ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.

This facility is open to users from academia and industry and its operations are at a time when the world enters a new era with a global economy fueled largely by scientific discoveries and technological innovations. NSLS-II provides the research tools needed to foster new discoveries and create breakthroughs in critical areas such as energy security, environment, and human health.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

NSLS-II Accelerator Division has an opening for an Electronic Technician to repair, troubleshoot, construct, install and test electronic equipment. In addition, this position will provide support for various electrical sub-systems critical to accelerator operations and will require ability to troubleshoot and identify modes of failure and mitigate corrective action. This position will require close interaction with technicians and engineers. Tasking will also include provision of technical support for development and special projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Troubleshoot and repair complex power supply systems using electronic test equipment

· Support the development and construction of prototype power supplies

· Repair and replace surface mounted components and circuit boards in power supply systems

· Support operations and repair and troubleshoot power supply systems

· Proficient with schematics and mechanical assembly drawings

· Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities

· Overtime work, including emergency call-in, required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

-- 6 years relevant work experience or;

-- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or

- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or;

- a BS degree in a technical field

· Experience with fabrication, assembly, wiring, testing electronics systems

· Experience with analog/digital electronics, computers and standard test equipment (function generators, oscilloscopes, multi-meters)

· Must be able to work from schematics, diagrams, and written procedures

· Basic machine shop skills

· Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of technical staff

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Tech Certification, engineering courses or college degree

· Solder and re-work techniques for through-hole and SMD components for high density PCB assemblies.

· Troubleshooting skills in digital and analog circuits

· Knowledge of spreadsheet software, measurement systems and computer programming of devices.

· Machine shop certifications and mechanical aptitude

· Familiarity with Lock-Out, Tag-Out procedures

· Experience in an accelerator, scientific, or research facility

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

· Must be safety-conscious and able to follow detailed written procedures

· Essential functions; lifting of 30 pounds, continuous walking / standing, climb a ladder and work at heights up to 30 feet

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
